Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — This week sees a strong showing for superhero comics, thanks in part to a pair of on-going events as well as a one-off story that is almost certainly going to end up on my (vaunted!) Best Singles Issues of 2020 List. In addition, we have a superhero adjacent title from the Black Hammer Universe. Simply put, it’s a good week to like tights and capes.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — Last weekend saw the advent of the 2020 Eisner Awards (a nice compliment to our own Extra Eisner Awards). One of the marquee prizes is the BEST CONTINUING SERIES AWARD, and this year’s prize went to the creator-owned title from Image Comics, Bitter Root. You can read more about Bitter Root in this excellent piece by Ariel Baska…and then when you’re done, you can head over to comiXology and buy the first volume of the series at a great sale price.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — The Top Comics to Buy for July 29, 2020 are a disparate and powerful bunch. The stories in this week’s crop of top recommendations range from a pair of major superhero debuts, to the return of one of the best Image Comics series to the finale of the very underrated Kill Lock from IDW Publishing. And! On top of all that, we get a new original graphic novel from one of the best teams in comics, with Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips releasing Pulp. In other words, there’s a lot going on this week and it’s great.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — To be totally blunt, it’s a chaotic time to be tracking and recommending new release comics. Some of the product coming out to stores (those that are open and functioning, that is) are books that were stalled in Diamond’s warehouse. Others are new releases, and still more have been regulated to digital-only releases. That said, we did our best to come up with a set of Top Comics to Buy for May 27, 2020, for those of who are able to shop for comics right now in these times.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — February was a solid month for comics, albeit one where many of the highlights were stories that had gained momentum through the end of last year and were paying off bigger pieces of their narrative puzzles this month. I’m thinking specifically here of X-Men #7 and Black Stars Above #4, which I’ll elaborate on more below.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — Once again here we are on the cusp of my favorite sort of week — the one where quality reigns over quantity, just a bit. Indeed, this week sees the continuation of most of my favorite superhero titles right now — Immortal Hulk, Superman, and X-Men, to be specific — while at the same time delivering some chilling and smart horror — Dollhouse Family — and the start of a new indie high-concept sci-fi book — Decorum. Basically, it’s a good week to read a handful of comics.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — Our Top Comics to Buy committee (of one) doesn’t typically go in for debut issues on this list. It’s hard to get a good sense of whether a series is really worth reading from just a debut alone. So, we like to sit back and give it an issue or two before we give it the august honor (super important) of appearing on this list. All of that is to say it really speaks to how much we liked Tartarus and Undone By Blood, both of which have debut issues appearing on this week’s list.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — The first month of the year has been a bit of a comedown for the direct market, which rushed out all the product it could for Christmas/the end of the year, with December 18 ranking as the busiest day for new release comics I can remember in many many years. It was, to be quite frank, a nice laid-back way to start the year. That said! There was quite a bit of good stuff, with strong continuations for the new line of X-Men comics as well as plenty of creator-owned excellence
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — After a few quieter weeks to start the year, the unstoppable flow of excellent new comics has returned. This is a heavy week on basically all fronts, from new superhero stuff to new creator-owned monthlies to new collected volumes/original graphic novels. Basically, whatever you’re into in the world of comics, there is probably something you’ll like coming at you this week.
