Top Comics to Buy for June 9, 2021
By Zack Quaintance — There’s always something fun about weeks when the Big 2 are really cooking, and that’s what we have here on the list of Top Comics to Buy for June 9, 2021. Marvel is serving up (what’s with all these food descriptors?) new issues of two of my favorites series of theirs, those being Iron Man and X-Men. DC Comics, meanwhile, has a fantastic anthology of new stories with DC Pride #1.

Top Comics to Buy for June 9, 2021
PICK OF THE WEEK
The Six Sidekicks of Trigger Keaton #1
Writer: Kyle Starks
Artist: Chris Schweizer
Color Assistant: Liz Trice Schweizer
Publisher: Image Comics
For fans of CHEW and ASSASSIN NATION comes a new action-mystery series from Eisner Award nominees CHRIS SCHWEIZER (Crogan Adventures) and KYLE STARKS (SEXCASTLE).
The world's most unlikable action star has been found dead, and his previous TV sidekicks are looking to solve the mystery. But how can you catch a murderer when almost everyone hated the victim? Now these sidekicks are going to learn what it means to be the stars of the show…that is, if any of them survive the STUNTMAN WAR!
Why It’s Cool: Kyle Starks and Chris Schweizer are two of the most clever creators in all of comics, and their regular team-ups are always a lot of fun. The Six Sidekicks of Trigger Keaton lives up to the lofty bar they’ve set, giving us the story of a despicable action star who passes away, leaving his varied set of sidekicks (who have very diverse feelings about him) to sort out the aftermath. You’ll hate Trigger Keaton, you’ll wonder what his sidekicks are thinking, and you’ll laugh a lot as you go through this great first issue.
Price: $3.99

Publisher: DC Comics
DC celebrates Pride Month with nine all-new stories starring fan-favorite LGBTQIA+ characters Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Midnighter, Extraño, Batwoman, Aqualad, Alan Scott, Obsidian, Future State Flash, Renee Montoya, Pied Piper, and many more! This anthology will also feature:
-The thrilling introduction of new hero DREAMER in the DCU
(as seen on The CW’s Supergirl)!
-A pinup gallery with art by Travis Moore, Kris Anka, Kevin Wada, Sophie Campbell, Nick Robles, and more!
-Six exciting new profiles of DCTV’s LGBTQIA+ characters and the actors who play them!
Why It’s Cool: This anthology is basically unprecedented — a set of stories about LGBTQ characters in the universe, done by all LGBTQ creators. It’s a wonderfully important book, and the quality of the stories in here is very high, focusing on characters outside of the more obvious DC Comics candidates.

Eve #2
Writer: Victor LaValle
Artist: Jo Mi-Gyeong
Colorist: Brittany Peer
Letterer: Andworld Design
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
* Will Eve escape the remnants of New York City in order to save her father and restore life to a dying planet?
* Accompanied by Wexler, Eve must stay one step ahead of the mutants stalking them who want to consume them.
* But when they are separated, she will discover that there are things even more terrifying in this new wasteland.
Why It’s Cool: Look, it’s a golden age for post-apocalyptic comics, but few have the charm and confidence of Eve. As I wrote during the week of the Eve #1 release, the debut issue was just about perfect. This second issue now fills in more details around this excellent and somewhat mysterious book.
Price: $3.99

Iron Man #9
Writer: Christopher Cantwell
Artist: Cafu
Colorist: Frank D’Armata
Letterer: Joe Caramagna
Publisher: Marvel Comics
THE ORIGIN OF KORVAC! After discovering the strange new sensation of self-doubt, Korvac and his crew take a detour in deep space to search for an unlikely ally. But conversion can often be difficult, and soon Korvac is left wondering if he’ll ever have any followers born from faith rather than fear.
Why It’s Cool: This run has just been stupendous, one of the best Iron Man runs of the past 20 years (which if you look at it, there’s actually been some really solid comics made around this character, but I digress…). In the first part of the run, the character was sort of regrounded in Marvel Comics history, and now in this second arc, Iron Man and a truly excellent eclectic supporting cast are exploring space. It’s all great, and in this issue, regular series artist Cafu returns. It’s much to be excited about.

X-Men #21
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Nick Dragotta, Sara Pichelli, Russell Dauterman, and Lucas Werneck
Colorist: Sunny Gho
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: Marvel Comics
THE HEROES OF KRAKOA DEBUT! It’s a changing if the guard as the first X-Men team of Krakoa debuts! One era ends as a new one begins, and the handoff happens here.
Why It’s Cool: Whatever you think of the expansive and varied X-Men line, it’s been hard to deny that the main X-Men title — penned by Krakoa Era mastermind Jonathan Hickman — hasn’t been a strong read. This issue looks to be the end of that run, at least in its current iteration, with Hickman passing the reigns of the main X-Men book off to Gerry Duggan while he goes on to do something called Inferno, the nature of which is not yet clear. Marvel hasn’t made this issue available to reviewers to read just yet, but we fully expect Hickman and co. (he’s teaming with some really great artists here) to go out on this run with a bang.
