An important part of this discourse has been around what other men in comics can do to create a safer and more welcoming atmosphere.

Meaning, that the coronavirus crisis in this country has shut down comic book printing, the distributor that ships comics nationwide, and the network of small businesses that sell the books in the community. In other words, enjoy the Best Comics for March 2020, because it’s looking like there won’t be one for April.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — It’s a miracle, folks. Here it is, still March, and I have finished the list for Best New #1 Comics for March 2020 (with the Best Comics for March 2020 slated to go live on April 1!). How did I — a guy who regularly posts these lists halfway into the following month, manage such a feat? Well, as you may have noticed, there is no new Top Comics to Buy piece for this week, owing to the fact that to my knowledge basically every publisher but DC and Marvel aren’t releasing new comics this week (digitally) due to the crisis.

I’m thinking specifically here of X-Men #7 and Black Stars Above #4, which I’ll elaborate on more below.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — Ah, it’s one of my favorite types of months for the Best New #1 Comics feature...one in which our top five section (at the bottom, ironically enough!) has five choices from five separate publishers. I love it when that happens, signaling as it does that this is an urbane site that appreciates the wide variety of stories being told right now...provided those stories are being told in a very specific monthly direct market format.

It certainly was around this blog, with a pair of new features rolling out, those being the Things I Liked and Didn’t Like update as well as the One Hot Panel thing, which is named after a mostly bad RHCP album for some reason I’m not even entirely sure about.

I did. As a result of surprisingly moving to Washington, D.C., in the middle of the year, I also attended Small Press Expo in September, where those aforementioned publishers rule the day.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — Look, I know I’ve been posting list after list after list of favorite comics things for 2019 since basically Christmas, and thank you all so much for indulging me with all of that. Picking favorite books over the past 12 months and articulating why I found them to be so successful is one of my favorite parts of running a comics blog. Today, however, I am not here to talk comics.

This is the final piece, and it looks at the Top 5 Best Comics of 2019, while yesterday’s piece looked at #6 - #15 and Wednesday’s at #16 - #25. Today’s, however, is all about our absolute favorite comics from 2019.

The final piece (coming this Friday!) will look at the Top 5 Best Comics of 2019, while the second to last (coming on Thursday!) looks at #6 - #15. Today’s, however, is all about our Top Comics of 2019, #16 - #25.

This more direct connection between artist and audience means comics stories are less polished, less labored, and less beholden to corporate interests than their counterparts on screens or prose pages. The result is an agile storytelling medium, where creators are arguably able to disseminate unique visions and perspectives better than if they’d spent years on a novel or on a large-scale production in television or film.

There was a lot to pick from here (thanks Vault!), and, yes, I’ve really stretched the definition of a Top 10 here, including two entires that have secondary lists of books buried within them. But you know what? This is my non-profit site and there are no shareholders, so rule-bending is rampant.

That is to say, why much graphic sequential storytelling takes place nowadays in full stories, graphic novels, and complete volumes — we do most of our writing here about the direct market, the pamphlets (as some call them) that come to stores each month to tell ongoing stories. Periodicals, for the older folks.

There have really been some great pieces this year (check out our Twitter to see them!). It’s been great, and so we’re coming together again now at the end of the year to talk about our favorite books.
