By Zack Quaintance — This week sees a strong showing for superhero comics, thanks in part to a pair of on-going events as well as a one-off story that is almost certainly going to end up on my (vaunted!) Best Singles Issues of 2020 List. In addition, we have a superhero adjacent title from the Black Hammer Universe. Simply put, it’s a good week to like tights and capes.

It’s the sound of me being significantly less stressed now that my Kickstarter campaign for Next Door has ended and I’ve had an entire three-day weekend to decompress, go hiking, and even read comics for the better part of an entire day. It’s been a nice recovery process. Now, I’m back with the Top Comics to Buy for September 9, 2020, which is essentially a set of superhero books (unusual for this feature) along with my favorite comic period, Ice Cream Man.

Over the years that I’ve formally been involved with the comics industry — primarily as a critic/reporter and a social media personality — I’ve written about too many comics to count. I have not, however, ever had to talk up and promote my own work directly, not until now. And I have to tell you…this way harder than it looks. In fact, I’d say that I came into this past weekend more burnt out on comics than I’ve ever been in my life. But still, I sat down to read my advanced review copies for the week…and the effect of just reading the books was restorative. And now it is my pleasure to share my restorative Top Comics to Buy for August 12 with all of you.

But there is still plenty of enjoy for digital readers on comiXology. The Dark Horse fire sale of basically their entire catalog continues, DC has put a number of second volumes up (many of which rarely go on sale), and, as always, there are some excellent gateways into other comics, too.

It’s a relatively sparse week with a few key titles to really sustain us, kind of like a fine dining experience where your food looks little but tastes amazing and when you leave, you leave satisfied.
