By Zack Quaintance — In this Best comiXology Sales Weekend of October 16, we’ve got several more horror-tinged stories in keeping with this spooky season. The highlight is Man and Superman and Other Stories, a classic volume we’ll talk up more below. But in addition, we’ve also got perhaps the Batgirl run for a certain generation, a tight IDW original series, and more.

Top Comics to Buy for October 14, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — Oh no, I’ve gone and filled our Top Comics to Buy for October 14, 2020 list with superheroes…there by negating all the work we’ve been putting in to move away from superheroes and onto broader coverage of the medium. However! I think the list of superhero books we have here (four of our top five are capes and tights) is about as good as superhero books get, with subversive takes on the subject matter, including Commanders in Crisis and Stealth, both from Image Comics.

Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of October 9, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — It’s October, and the horror comics sales on comixology are flying. In fact, as a direct result of this bit of sales seasonality, a strong majority of our Best comiXology Sales Weekend of October 9, 2020, are horror or horror-tinged, plus also there’s a book about Namor for some reason. Regardless of genre, though, as always we have five great Friday picks for digital comics shopping on a budget.

Top Comics to Buy for October 7, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — This week brings us an excellent and eclectic week of comics from some of our favorite independent publishers, with Image Comics chief among them. In fact, if not for Lonely Receiver #2 (our pick of the week!), it would have been a clean Image Comics sweep this week for our Top Comics to Buy for October 7. What’s especially nice is the genres are varied as well.

Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of October 2, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — One of the many things I absolutely love about being part of the comics community is the fall and Halloween. I’ve never been part of an industry/group that gets up for the year’s scariest month like comics. This love of all things terror even manifests itself in the volumes that show up this week in our Best comiXology Sales, Weekend of October 2, 2020, which is no slouch in the horror department.

Top Comics to Buy for September 30, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — Ah, a fifth Wednesday of the month, a weird Wednesday in which releases tend to be less in volume. The fifth Wednesday often also sees publishers putting out a grabbag of releases that maybe don’t fit neatly on other weeks. This isn’t the case with all our picks this week — see those from Image — but there’s still a feeling of a different kind of Wednesday. And you can find our Top Comics to Buy for September 30, 2020 within that below.

Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of September 25, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — Eclectic is my favorite type of Best comiXology Sales lists, and this week’s is perhaps the single most eclectic bunch of books we’ve ever assembled for this feature. We have five different publishers, ranging from indie to corporate Big 2 to European reprints. The end result is a great list that might have some choices you’ve been meaning to read right there beside hidden gems you were not previously aware of before reading this.

Top Comics to Buy for September 23, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — This week sees a strong showing for superhero comics, thanks in part to a pair of on-going events as well as a one-off story that is almost certainly going to end up on my (vaunted!) Best Singles Issues of 2020 List. In addition, we have a superhero adjacent title from the Black Hammer Universe. Simply put, it’s a good week to like tights and capes.

Best ComiXology Sales: Weekend of September 18, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — Things are bad out there, between the pandemic, the apocryphal president, the stress of the coming election, the reckoning with racial injustices, the entire West Coast being on fire…the list just goes on and on. Thankfully, though, we’ve got a colorful anecdote for some of what might be stressing you out, and that colorful anecdote is Batman ‘66, which is one of our picks for the Best ComiXology Sales for the Weekend of September 18, 2020.

Top Comics to Buy for September 16, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — I try to limit the number of new #1 comics we put on these weekly lists, but this week’s Top Comics to Buy for September 16 is a rare group that has two of them on there. The reason being is twofold. I typically find that #1 comics sell well enough on their own. They get peak publisher promotion. So much so that many of you out there reading this have probably already made up your mind whether you’re going to buy this week’s new #1s. One issue is also difficult for me to recommend, because how do I know whether it’s worth following long term?

Anyway, if you’re looking for some top-tier capes storytelling this weekend, we’ve got your picks.

Top Comics to Buy for September 9, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — Ah, hear that? It’s the sound of me being significantly less stressed now that my Kickstarter campaign for Next Door has ended and I’ve had an entire three-day weekend to decompress, go hiking, and even read comics for the better part of an entire day. It’s been a nice recovery process. Now, I’m back with the Top Comics to Buy for September 9, 2020, which is essentially a set of superhero books (unusual for this feature) along with my favorite comic period, Ice Cream Man.

Top Comics to Buy for September 2, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — Here we are bright and early with our Top Comics to Buy for September 2, 2020, and it’s my favorite kind of week — eclectic. Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of August 28, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — It’s a week of villainy and crime comics here on our Best comiXology Sales for the weekend of August 28, 2020. It’s also a week in which one of my all-time favorite superhero comics runs is on sale, with Kurt Busiek and Mark Bagley’s classic Thunderbolts topping our list. This was a formative set of comics for me, and if you haven’t read it yet, I really recommend you do so now.

This weekend is also DC Comics Fandome, the online promotional event the publisher is rolling out to replace the con appearances it can’t make this year due to COVID-19. Anyway, as a result, there’s a big DC sale going on, and we’ve picked two of our favorite Bendis books from his DC era to include on the list of Best comiXology Sales weekend of August 21 below.

Top Comics to Buy for August 19, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — August is an exhausted month, perhaps this August more than any other, with everything that’s been going on in the world. Comics, in fact, had a rough week of its own, with one of the biggest corporate entities in the space — DC Comics and owners WarnerMedia — making known that it would soon be undertaking a restructuring that involves reduced staff. Even if it’s ultimately for the best (which very much remains to be seen), people losing their jobs in comics is no fun. That said, we’ve got a set of vibrant books — especially of the indie variety — arriving this week, and below you can find our picks for the Top Comics to Buy for August 19.

Top Comics to Buy for August 12, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — So, as you’ve likely noticed if you follow either this site or my Twitter account, I spent most of last week promoting my first Kickstarter comic, Next Door. Over the years that I’ve formally been involved with the comics industry — primarily as a critic/reporter and a social media personality — I’ve written about too many comics to count. I have not, however, ever had to talk up and promote my own work directly, not until now. And I have to tell you…this way harder than it looks. In fact, I’d say that I came into this past weekend more burnt out on comics than I’ve ever been in my life. But still, I sat down to read my advanced review copies for the week…and the effect of just reading the books was restorative. And now it is my pleasure to share my restorative Top Comics to Buy for August 12 with all of you.

Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of August 7, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — I’ve made no secret about this, but I’m running a Kickstarter this week for my first full-length comic, Next Door, and as such, I’ve been spending a whole lot of time browsing books on Kickstarter. And folks? There are just so many good small press comics being made these days. Coincidentally at the same time, one of the marquee best comiXology sales for this weekend just so happens to be small press comics, and so this week’s picks (past the PICK OF THE WEEK) are heavy on those choices.
