Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — Here we are bright and early with our Top Comics to Buy for September 2, 2020, and it’s my favorite kind of week — eclectic. Nowhere is this more evident than with our pick of the week, Lonely Receiver #1. We’ll go into more detail about it below, but this is the type of surprising and singular book we just love to see launched, one that delivers an expert grasp of comics-making craft along with bold risk taking.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — I absolutely love this week’s selection of the Top Comics to Buy, and the reason is that every single one of these books is friendly to new readers. Some of them — Ice Cream Man, namely — are anthology series, in which every issue is friendly to new readers. Others — like Coffin Bound or Usagi Yojimbo — are starting new story arcs that are about as friendly to new readers as is possible. Whatever the case, all five of the issues in this week’s list are comics we highly recommend readers picking up, regardless of familiarity with the individual series.

This week features a nice variety of superhero stuff, jumping on points for longer runs, and complete reads. The ideal balance, I might go so far as to say. Anyway, apparently DC Comics is going to start trickling new releases back to stores (any that are opened, anyway), but there’s still no clear and total end in site to the comics release pause. But the backlist reading goes on.
