Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of September 25, 2020
By Zack Quaintance — Eclectic is my favorite type of Best comiXology Sales lists, and this week’s is perhaps the single most eclectic bunch of books we’ve ever assembled for this feature. We have five different publishers, ranging from indie to corporate Big 2 to European reprints. The end result is a great list that might have some choices you’ve been meaning to read right there beside hidden gems you were not previously aware of before reading this.
Enjoy!
Best comiXology Sales Weekend of September 25
PICK OF THE WEEK
The New Teen Titans
Writer: Marv Wolfman
Artists: George Perez and various
Publisher: DC Comics
The first 8 issues of the groundbreaking 1980s NEW TEEN TITANS now available for the first time in years! When the series launched, writer Marv Wolfman (CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS) and artist George Perez (FINAL CRISIS: LEGION OF THREE WORLDS, Avengers) crafted a timeless story starring Robin, Kid Flash, Wonder Girl, Cyborg, Changling, Raven and Starfire - a group of young individuals with great powers and strong personalities who learned their way in the world through the strength of their friendship and the adventures they shared.
Why It’s Cool: This is a simple comparison to make, but if DC Comics had an answer to the formative and all-time great Chris Claremont-penned X-Men comics, it was The New Teen Titans by Marv Wolfman and George Perez. Like those X-Men books, these stories served up issue after issue of complex soap opera, super-powered romantic drama. It’s an all-time great run that to this day has a not-insignificant segment of the DC Comics fandom clamoring constantly for better use of DC’s sidekick and legacy characters, and 10 volumes of the run are on sale digitally now.
Price: $5.99 each or $59.90 for all 10 volumes

I Love This Part
Writer/Artist: Tillie Walden
Publisher: Avery Hill Publishing
Two girls in a small town in the USA kill time together as they try to get through their days at school. They watch videos, share earbuds as they play each other songs and exchange their stories. In the process they form a deep connection and an unexpected relationship begins to develop. In her follow up to the critically acclaimed The End of Summer, Tillie Walden tells the story of a small love that can make you feel like the biggest thing around, and how it’s possible to find another person who understands you when you thought no-one could.
Why It’s Cool: Tillie Walden is one of the best and most idiosyncratic creators in all of comics. Armed with a truly unique sense of visual storytelling, Walden has for the past five years or so turned out stunning, ethereal work centered largely around interiority and personal relationships. The big books for Walden have been Are You Listening? and On a Sunbeam, but this week you can check out some of Walden’s earlier work, which is a great choice to make this weekend.

Marie Curie: The Radium Fairy
Writer/Artist: Montellier
Publisher: Europe Comics
Marie Curie is the only woman ever to have received two Nobel prizes: the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903, shared with her husband, Pierre Curie, and the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for her work with polonium and radium in 1911. She was also the first woman ever to teach at the Sorbonne. This inspired comic is set at the time she received her second Nobel Prize, when a vicious press campaign was launched against her, denouncing her affair with the physician Paul Langevin. Through her flash-backs, we're invited to witness the key moments of this exceptional woman's life and work.
Why It’s Cool: I was recently in Asheville, North Carolina, on a road trip to pick up our adorable new puppy, and while walking through Downtown Asheville, I came across an artist selling scientist rockstar magnets. There were many, but the one I ended up buying was of Marie Curie, a fascinating figure who to this day ranks as the only woman to ever receive two Nobel Prizes…earning those awards all the way back in 1903 and 1911. I also have developed an increasing love of biographical comics of late, and this book from the European comics creator Montellier combines both of those interests of mine.

Neil Gaiman’s How to Talk to Girls at Parties
Writer: Neil Gaiman
Artists: Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Neil Gaiman! Fábio Moon! Gabriel Bá! Two teenage boys are in for a tremendous shock when they crash a party where the girls are far more than they appear! From Neil Gaiman—one of the most celebrated authors of our time—and award- winning artists Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá, this sumptuous graphic novel is not to be missed! Moon and Bá adapt the Gaiman story they were born to draw!
Why It’s Cool: How to Talk to Girls at Parties is a hell of a name for a story. Combine that with a creative team here that is about as A++ as it can possibly get, and you have a must-read story about teenage boys going to a party where the girls in attendance are shockingly more than they appear. This book, in my opinion, flew just a tiny bit under the radar when it was published in recent years, but it’s a great read. Now is a wonderful time to catch up with this one, to be sure.

Rocket Vol. 1: The Blue River Score
Writer: Al Ewing
Artist: Adam Gorham
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Get ready for a life of spacecrime with Rocket! It's a dirty universe out there, even when you're not regularly mistaken for trash-foraging vermin. And it's about to get dirtier. He thought his paws were clean, that he was on the up-and-up. But then an old flame swam back into his life, and he was back in the game...the heist game. Rocket will end up in court in the trial of the (light) century, and there's only one thing keeping our hero out of the iron hotel: the galaxy's greatest lawyer, Murd Blurdock! Is he worth his fee, or will Rocket be forced to break out of prison - again?! Plus: An interplanetary mobster who makes the Kingpin look like Aunt May! Deadpool! Castor Gnawbarque III, the richest sentient in three sectors! And...Ranger Rocket, sheriff of Halfworld?!
Why It’s Cool: It feels odd to remember now, but Al Ewing was not always the high-concept inventive mind behind giant Marvel Comics hits like Empyre and Immortal Hulk. No, for some time Ewing was one of those writers who was being given cast-off series and turning them into gold, books like The Ultimates, Contest of Champions, and this week’s feature best of sales pick — Rocket. This is a heist story starring Rocket Racoon, wherein Ewing teams with the fantastic artist Adam Gorham. If you like the high-profile superhero work Ewing has been penning as of late, this is sort of a neat look at how a very talented writer comports himself on a less-than-marquee title.
