Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — Hey kids, high-concept sci-fi comics! Of several different varieties!…that’s basically the tagline for this week’s Top Comics to Buy for October 28, 2020, which features the latest chapter of the startlingly accurate dystopian Lazarus, the tournament getting under way in X of Swords, and the new series that everyone is buzzing about — Giga. It’s a great week for complex sci-fi, and a reminder of what comics has to offer (complicated fantastical ideas with quick(er) turnaround time) that other mediums do not.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — Comics and sports have a complicated relationship. This maybe stems back to tired and outdated bullying dynamics in schools, because I don’t know how many times I’ve heard typically older creators, say stuff like, “We’re comics people, we don’t like sports!” As if jocks versus nerds isn’t an outdated paradigm, as if everyone nowadays doesn’t watch Marvel movies; as if it were still 1988.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — I was downright elated to see that there was a massive Image Comics graphic novel and collected trade sale on this weekend. One of the things that frustrated me throughout the pandemic was that Image (one of my favorite publishers) wasn’t running any new sales. Well, the time to catch up has now arrived — our Best comiXology sales for the weekend of October 23 list is entirely made up of Image Comics.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — Earlier today I wrote a blog entitled When Is Saga Coming Back: Not in 2020. The title kind of speaks for itself there, sadly. In the process of putting it together, however, I started to think about doing a new reading list, one aimed for more casual comics fans who might be left wondering during these fallow times — what other comics are like Saga?
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — There’s lots to love in the Top Comics to Buy for October 21, 2020 for students of comics craft, be it with individual issues like the Tonci Zonjic-illustrated Skulldigger and Skeleton Boy #5, or the hardcover graphic novella series November by Matt Fraction and Elsa Charretier, which is now on its third book. You can find all that and more on this week’s list…enjoy!
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — In this Best comiXology Sales Weekend of October 16, we’ve got several more horror-tinged stories in keeping with this spooky season. The highlight is Man and Superman and Other Stories, a classic volume we’ll talk up more below. But in addition, we’ve also got perhaps the Batgirl run for a certain generation, a tight IDW original series, and more.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — Oh no, I’ve gone and filled our Top Comics to Buy for October 14, 2020 list with superheroes…there by negating all the work we’ve been putting in to move away from superheroes and onto broader coverage of the medium. However! I think the list of superhero books we have here (four of our top five are capes and tights) is about as good as superhero books get, with subversive takes on the subject matter, including Commanders in Crisis and Stealth, both from Image Comics.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — It’s October, and the horror comics sales on comixology are flying. In fact, as a direct result of this bit of sales seasonality, a strong majority of our Best comiXology Sales Weekend of October 9, 2020, are horror or horror-tinged, plus also there’s a book about Namor for some reason. Regardless of genre, though, as always we have five great Friday picks for digital comics shopping on a budget.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — This week brings us an excellent and eclectic week of comics from some of our favorite independent publishers, with Image Comics chief among them. In fact, if not for Lonely Receiver #2 (our pick of the week!), it would have been a clean Image Comics sweep this week for our Top Comics to Buy for October 7. What’s especially nice is the genres are varied as well.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — One of the many things I absolutely love about being part of the comics community is the fall and Halloween. I’ve never been part of an industry/group that gets up for the year’s scariest month like comics. This love of all things terror even manifests itself in the volumes that show up this week in our Best comiXology Sales, Weekend of October 2, 2020, which is no slouch in the horror department.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — Ah, a fifth Wednesday of the month, a weird Wednesday in which releases tend to be less in volume. The fifth Wednesday often also sees publishers putting out a grabbag of releases that maybe don’t fit neatly on other weeks. This isn’t the case with all our picks this week — see those from Image — but there’s still a feeling of a different kind of Wednesday. And you can find our Top Comics to Buy for September 30, 2020 within that below.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — Eclectic is my favorite type of Best comiXology Sales lists, and this week’s is perhaps the single most eclectic bunch of books we’ve ever assembled for this feature. We have five different publishers, ranging from indie to corporate Big 2 to European reprints. The end result is a great list that might have some choices you’ve been meaning to read right there beside hidden gems you were not previously aware of before reading this.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — This week sees a strong showing for superhero comics, thanks in part to a pair of on-going events as well as a one-off story that is almost certainly going to end up on my (vaunted!) Best Singles Issues of 2020 List. In addition, we have a superhero adjacent title from the Black Hammer Universe. Simply put, it’s a good week to like tights and capes.
