Top Comics to Buy for May 4, 2022

By Zack Quaintance — This is the week before Free Comic Book Day, and, as such, it’s a bit lighter than most other weeks. That said, we’ve still got a great set of books for the Top Comics to Buy for May 4, 2022. Specifically, writer Christopher Cantwell (one of our faves around here) and his collaborators have a new series starting and a major story arc ending, as you’ll see below…

Enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for May 4, 2022

Iron Man #19
Writer:
Christopher Cantwell
Artist: Cafu
Colorist: Frank D’Armata
Letterer: Joe Caramagna
Publisher: Marvel Comics
AT LAST, THE STUNNING CONCLUSION OF THE BOOKS OF KORVAC! Tony Stark must face Michael Korvac once again, and once and for all. No cosmic powers, no allies or henchmen, and no...armor? This is the very end of a very long and very rocky journey; Tony's going to have to get by on his own blood, sweat, and tears. For the first time in his life, he's all out of ideas.
Why It’s Cool: If you regularly follow this site, you are no doubt aware that we absolutely love this run. In fact, it’s currently the lead item in our Best Comics of 2022 (So Far): Marvel Comics list. So, with that in mind it should come as no surprise that Iron Man #19 — the conclusion of the biggest epic of this run — is our pick of the week. It’s all been building to this…

Monkey Meat #5
Writer/Artist:
Juni Ba
Publisher: Image Comics
MINISERIES FINALE
The Monkey Meat Company has fallen! The culprit? Golo, a tiny, brainless boy whose obsessive consumption of the simian carne drove the entire island to ruin. But not all is lost for a brighter future, as Golo is chosen for a quest that could make him into the hero of a better age! If he could just think about something other than meat...
Why It’s Cool: Regular readers of this site are also no doubt aware that we absolutely love Monkey Meat, with Monkey Meat #2 snagging one of my rare personal perfect 10 reviews. Well, much like in the pick above, this week’s issue is a finale. Monkey Meat is an anthology series, but there is quite a bit of coherency to this book around the setting and themes. It’s all used quite well in this final (for now, hopefully!) issue. Put simply, if you’ve been loving this series so far (as we have), you’re also going to love this issue. Just, good luck picking which one of the five comics that make up Monkey Meat is your favorite.

One-Star Squadron #6
Writer:
Mark Russell
Artist: Steve Lieber
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Letterer: Dave Sharpe
Publisher: DC Comics
Funeral for a coworker! The former employees of Heroz4U mourn the loss of yet another one of their own as they all struggle to return to civilian life. Have things changed for the better for some? Or are they all destined to be one-star heroes for good? Be sure to check out the grand finale of the critically acclaimed miniseries by Mark Russell (The Flintstones) and Steve Lieber (Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen)!
Why It’s Cool: In this book, two of my favorite creators — writer Mark Russell and artist Steve Lieber — tell one of the saddest stories I can recall of late, and they do it with deep bench DC Comics superhero characters. This final issue brings quite a bit of poignancy and thought to the sad events of recent issues, putting a meaningful punctuation mark on this book.

Quests Aside #1
Writer:
Brian Schirmer
Artist: Elena Gogou
Colorist: Rebecca Nalty
Letterer: AndWorld Design
Publisher: Vault Comics
A skeleton, an apprentice mage, and an exiled princess walk into a bar... for another shift at Quests Aside, the local watering hole run by once legendary, now retired adventurer Barrow.
When the King privately explains that he plans to shut the place down, Barrow must find a way to hold onto his business and the family he's built around it.
It's always sunny in the realms!

Why It’s Cool: There’s an incredible hook to this one…it’s Dungeons and Dragons meets It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, a fantasy comic that is deeply interested in a staple of TTRPGs — the tavern, the bar, the pub. And, as Clyde Hall wrote in the advanced review for us, it’s all quite a bit of fun.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi #1
Writer:
Christopher Cantwell
Artist: Ario Anindito
Colorist:
Carlos Lopez
Letterer:
Joe Caramagna
Publisher:
Marvel Comics
FAST APPROACHES THE ULTIMATE DESTINY OF ONE OF THE JEDI'S MOST RENOWNED MASTERS!
As he spends his final days in the remote deserts of Tatooine, Obi-Wan Kenobi takes time to reflect on - and record - key moments of a heroic life long-lived.
Writing in old leather-bound journals from his hermit's hut, Obi-Wan remembers his days as a young Jedi Initiate, his trials as a Padawan, the crucible of Jedi Knighthood and the Clone Wars, and some of the earliest challenges he faced as a true Master of the Force!
In this tale, Obi-Wan considers a watershed Youngling adventure he narrowly survived on Coruscant when he was but eight years of age...
This is just the beginning of his Jedi journey!
Why It’s Cool: In short, this just seems like a perfect fit of characters and creators, made all the better by the gorgeous Phil Noto covers that will run the length of this miniseries.
