Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of June 19, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — The thing about perusing these comiXology sales, is that there’s not really a unified aesthetic week-to-week. Some weeks, we have all indie books and literary-minded graphic novels; other weeks its all capes and tights superheroes. The best comiXology sales for the weekend of June 19 is very much the latter, going hard with superhero stories.

In fact, right now you can get the two biggest things happening at their respective publishers with all of Immortal Hulk from Marvel and the first Dark Nights: Metal event from DC Comics, both of which are available for roughly $20 or less. Check out those and our other picks below!

Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of June 19, 2020

*PICK OF THE WEEK*
Guardians of the Galaxy by Dan Abnett
Writers:
Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning
Artists:
Rick Magyar, Paul Pelletier, Wes Craig, Brad Walker
Publisher:
Marvel Comics
With the fabric of the universe torn, all that stands between us and invading horrors is a team of cosmic misfits. Led by Star-Lord, the newly-minted Guardians of the Galaxy include a who's who of the mightiest -and most bizarre - protectors the stars have ever seen! Rocket Raccoon, Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Gamora, Adam Warlock, Mantis, the all-new Quasar, Cosmo the telepathic space dog and more take on the universe's most dangerous menaces...and have fun while doing it!
Why It’s Cool: This is the run that delivered us the Guardians of the Galaxy that we know today…or at least the ones that the masses know from the movies. But more importantly, this is one of the best superhero space operas of the modern era, just a rip-roaring romp through the cosmos that would take a forgotten aged team of heroes and mold them into yet another mighty Marvel franchise. For roughly $17, this 30-ish issue run is a fun way to spend a weekend of comics reading.
Price:
$16.95 for all five volumes.

Berserker Unbound
Writer:
Jeff Lemire
Artist:
Mike Deodato, Jr.
Publisher:
Dark Horse Comics
Lemire! Deodato Jr.! A merciless sword and sorcery warrior finds himself blasted through a wormhole to a modern day metropolis where he must protect those around him from an evil wizard determined to send him to hell. From the Eisner Award–winning team of Jeff Lemire, Mike Deodato Jr., and Frank Martin, comes this urban warrior fantasy series! Collecting issues #1–#4 of Berserker Unbound and featuring a sketchbook section and pinups by Mike Mignola, Andrea Sorrentino, Dustin Nguyen, and more!
Why It’s Cool: This book flew under the radar just a little bit, but with the veteran creative team of Jeff Lemire and Mike Deodato, Jr., it was a fun and entertaining read, one that essentially thrives off of the dynamic of a time-misplaced Conan the Barbarian and a down-on-his-luck homeless man in the modern era. It’s a charming and well-done comic, and a great read for this sale price.

$7.49

The Boys
Writer:
Garth Ennis
Artist:
Darick Robertson
Publisher:
Dynamite Entertainment
This is going to hurt! In a world where costumed heroes soar through the sky and masked vigilantes prowl the night, someone's got to make sure the "supes" don't get out of line. And someone will! Billy Butcher, Wee Hughie, Mother's Milk, The Frenchman, and The Female are The Boys: A CIA-backed team of very dangerous people, each one dedicated to the struggle against the most dangerous force on Earth - superpower! Some superheroes have to be watched. Some have to be controlled. And some of them - sometimes - need to be taken out of the picture. That's when you call in The Boys! After the opening story arc introducing Hughie to the team (issues 1-6), Dark avenger Tek-Knight and his ex-partner Swingwing are in trouble (issues 7-14). Big trouble. One has lost control of his terrifyingly overactive sex-drive, and the other might just be a murderer. It's up to Hughie and Butcher to work out which is which, in Get Some. Then, in Glorious Five-Year Plan, The Boys travel to Russia - where their corporate opponents are working with the mob, in a super-conspiracy that threatens to spiral lethally out of control. Good thing our heroes have Love Sausage on their side.
Why It’s Cool: Look, The Boys from Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson is technically a superhero comic…but it’s not a comic that elevates superheroes. In fact, the premise of this series (which is now a television show and also has a new comic coming out via publisher Dynamite) is that someone needs to keep superheroes from acting poorly…and that someone is The Boys. In the hands of a different creative team, this sort of comic could very well become cynical, but that’s not the case with The Boys, a character-driven epic of a comic that gleefully flaunts and subverts expectations throughout.
Price:
$53.94 for the entire series.

Dark Nights: Metal
Writer:
Scott Snyder
Artist:
Greg Capullo
Publisher:
DC Comics
The Dark Knight has uncovered one of the lost mysteries of the universe...one that could destroy the very fabric of the DC Universe! The dark corners of reality that have never been seen till now! The Dark Multiverse is revealed in all its devastating danger--a team of twisted, evil versions of Batman hellbent on destroying the DC Universe! With appearances from heroes, villains and faces long forgotten, DARK NIGHTS: METAL will examine every choice a hero doesn't take and every path they don't walk, and open up worlds that are forged by nightmares.
Why It’s Cool: Dark Nights: Death Metal debuted this past week, launching a sequel that seems poised to put an exclamation point on years of long-form superhero storytelling by writer Scott Snyder and a varied group of collaborators. You know what makes a sequel much easier to follow? Having read what came before, and now you can get the entire first Dark Nights: Metal event for roughly $20. Great time to play catch up.
Price:
$20.36 for the entire event.

Immortal Hulk
Writer:
Al Ewing
Artist:
Joe Bennett
Publisher:
Marvel Comics
I
s he man or monster...or is he both? You know Bruce Banner. He's quiet, calm, never complains. He's a scientist who believes he can use the darkest elements of his personality to do good in the world. If someone were to shoot him in the head...all he'd do is die. But the horror lives deeper. And the horror refuses to die. When night falls, something other than the man gets up again. The horror is the Immortal Hulk! And though he cannot die, the Hulk is being hunted yet again. By the government, by Alpha Flight, by the mysterious Shadow Base - and by the Avengers! But Bruce has even bigger problems. Something terrible has infected him. Something with unspeakable plans for humanity. And the only one who knows about this dark infection...is the Immortal Hulk!
Why It’s Cool: There’s no better thing happening in all of superhero comics right now than Immortal Hulk (with apologies to X-Men), and now you can get the first six volumes of this incredible book for about $15. The thing about Immortal Hulk is that yes, it’s a superhero comic based on a long-held IP owned by a corporation, but it reads far more like an indie project, with is deep and dark sensibilities that transcend the genres usual tropes and find a more poignant territory. What’s great is that this book also finds that kind of ground in many different ways through the course of its run, rather than hitting the same notes over again. It’s great, must-read stuff.
Price:
$15.24 for all six volumes.

Immortal Hulk Vol. 1; Immortal Hulk Vol. 2; Immortal Hulk Vol. 3; Immortal Hulk Vol. 4; Immortal Hulk Vol. 5; and Immortal Hulk Vol. 6.
