Let's Read ZENITH by Grant Morrison and Steve Yeowell
By Zack Quaintance — Myself and Comics Bookcase senior staff writer d. emerson eddy have been involved in a serious, long-term read of all comics written by Grant Morrison. We’ve done all this Marvel work, we’ve done the Vertigo classic The Invisibles, and we’ve done my personal favorite, the Doom Patrol to Flex Mentallo combo (we’ve also done Hellboy, but that’s not Morrison, so…). We’ve gone in mostly sequential order so far, but that ends now. Now, we’re going to read Zenith by Grant Morrison and Steve Yeowell, the 2000AD classic.
Below you can find our projected schedule, reading order, and links to order the books in case you’d like to join us…which you absolutely should!
Zenith by Grant Morrison and Steve Yeowell
Zenith, for the uninitiated is a superhero created by Grant Morrison, Steve Yeowell, and Brendan McCarthy, within the weekly British sci-fi comic, 2000 AD. The character’s first appearance took place in 1987 (2000AD #535), and he quickly established himself as a sort of more sarcastic take on the superhero. Like most Morrison work, the book sort of synched with/slightly pre-saged the zeitgeist, mirroring the sort of Gen X culture of the times. Morrison’s work with the character is available in four collected hardcovers, but more on that below.
Now with that out of the way, let’s go into the details. Here are the broad strokes:
Read each day from the collected hardcovers volumes, Monday - Friday, starting January 31. We’re usually going to do 3 chapters a day, except at the end of each volume, we’ll finish each volume by just reading two, if that’s how the books end up breaking down. For example, the first volume will divide like so…
M: prologue - 3; T: 4 - 6; W: 7 - 9; TH: 10 - 12; F: 13 - Epilogue; Next M: Interlude 1 and interlude 2Tweet about those chapters with the hashtag #Zenith2000AD (I usually post mine around 8:30 p.m. ET)
And use the volumes listed in order below (full disclosure, if you order from those links, it goes to supporting the site via the Amazon Affiliate program)…
If you prefer to read digitally (as I am), you can get the digital edition’s directly from the 2000AD website.
Finally, check the space below each Friday for a compilation of some of our Tweets from the week:
WEEK ONE, Zenith - Phase One, Ch. 1 - Epilogue
Zenith: Phase One, Prologue - Chapter 3. Welp, here we go, first night of reading for what I believe are the earliest Grant Morrison comics we’ll be able to get digitally, illustrated by Steve Yeowell and lettered by Mark King. I enjoyed this introduction. #Zenith2000AD pic.twitter.com/LV9IKkRB0q

More "gathering the team" fun as it turns to complete bollocks. Maybe, forgive me I'm not British. But I'm really good at butchering numerous regional accents.
Zenith - Phase One, 7 - 9: We get a Siadwel sobers up montage just in time for the villain to re-emerge…but also just in time for Zenith’s fluctuating biorhythms to complicate his powers. Nice building tension in these chapters. #Zenith2000AD pic.twitter.com/S6CMnEKTbZ

Chapters 10-12 of Phase I of #Zenith2000AD bring the old folks of Cloud 9 and Zenith to fight against Masterman. From Grant Morrison, Steve Yeowell, and Mark King.
— d. emerson eddy (@93418) February 3, 2022
Zenith, Phase One - Ch. 13 & Epilogue: The bad guy is defeated…but probably buy another bad guy but just bad in a different way. Zenith doesn’t do too much, though he is imperiled and we’re left to expect more (reluctant) heroics soon. #Zenith2000AD pic.twitter.com/Yddu0FlAeZ

WEEK TWO, Zenith - Phase One, Interludes through Zenith - Phase Two, Ch. 12

We get too many superhumans, shady organizations, government agents, and fun with smashing things. pic.twitter.com/n4jyO2XofJ
Zenith, Phase 2 - Ch. 4 to Ch. 6: Great stuff in these chapters. There’s a lot going on…US secret agents tasked with challenging superhumans, dark realities, a Superman thought lost through a mirror returning with messages. Really enjoying this second phase. #Zenith2000AD pic.twitter.com/862nGo50Cp
— Comics Bookcase (@ComicsBookcase) February 10, 2022
Zenith Phase 2, Ch. 7 - Ch. 9: A thing I really enjoy about these comics is the rate of revelations is really high, and it feels like we’re learning way more about the main character in every chapter. This one let’s us know he’s more powerful than we maybe suspected #Zenith2000AD pic.twitter.com/7HQNYPaPwx

Peyne fills Zenith in on what happened to his parents and then...BRINGS THE PAIN. Okay, terrible pun.

In #Zenith2000AD's Phase II, chapters 10 - 12, by Grant Morrison, Steve Yeowell, and "Kid" (Gordon Robson).
WEEK THREE, Zenith - Phase Two, Ch. 13 - Zenith Phase Three, Ch. 9
Phase II of #Zenith2000AD continues with chapters 12 through 15. Zenith tries to stop Peyne & Wallace, Mandala readies himself to try to catch some missiles, and the Iron Lady does some shady actions. By Grant Morrison, Steve Yeowell, and Gordon Robson (Kid).
— d. emerson eddy (@93418) February 14, 2022
Meetings with a strange shapeshifter, alternate superheroes zeroing in on Uluru, and Zenith's history.
— d. emerson eddy (@93418) February 15, 2022
Phase II of #Zenith2000AD concludes in Chapter 16, the epilogue, and Interlude 3. From Grant Morrison, Steve Yeowell, Gordon Robson (Kid), Manuel Carmona, and John Aldrich.
Zenith Phase 3, Prologue - Ch. 3: I had been told to expect it but Yeowell’s artwork seems to have somehow gotten even better in these comics, which really elevate the level of superheroic multiverse hi jinx in play here. Great stuff. #Zenith2000AD pic.twitter.com/lQX8lgf3QE
— Comics Bookcase (@ComicsBookcase) February 17, 2022
Zenith Phase 3, Ch. 4 - Ch. 6: This arc is just the best. The idea that they’re being asked to destroy whole worlds so the evil won’t spread is a powerful one, making you ask what you would do and who might you trust. #Zenith2000AD pic.twitter.com/RKCek1BCb3
— Comics Bookcase (@ComicsBookcase) February 18, 2022
We're on to chapters 7 through 9 of Phase III of #Zenith2000AD as the onward Christian (and not so Christian) soldiers deploy to the two alternate realities to destroy them. Brought to you by Grant Morrison, Steve Yeowell, and Gordon Robson (Kid).
— d. emerson eddy (@93418) February 18, 2022
WEEK FOUR, Zenith Phase Three, Ch. 10 - Ch. 21
Zenith Phase 3, Ch. 10 - Ch. 12: Wherein things go from really really bad, to somehow even worse. Absolutely stunning cartooning throughout all of this one, which involves fallen worlds, murder, and surprise murder. #Zenith2000AD pic.twitter.com/MjzKfrHMTO
— Comics Bookcase (@ComicsBookcase) February 23, 2022
Zenith Phase 3, Ch. 13 - Ch. 15: Great chapters. Steve Yeowell’s artwork is outstanding, and the story pushes this plot construct, wherein a group of heroes come together to save the multiverse but the enemy could be inhabiting any of them. Great reading tonight. #Zenith2000AD pic.twitter.com/41SMu2Pmwm
— Comics Bookcase (@ComicsBookcase) February 24, 2022
In chapters 16 - 18 of Phase III of #Zenith2000AD we've got another universe going BOOM!, conspiracy, betrayal, and doom. Delivered by the illustrious Grant Morrison, Steve Yeowell, and Gordon "Kid Robson".
— d. emerson eddy (@93418) February 24, 2022
The truth will out and heroes will do that hero thing heroically. Grant Morrison, Steve Yeowell, and Gordon "Kid Robson" bring us chapters 19-21 of Phase III of #Zenith2000AD
— d. emerson eddy (@93418) February 25, 2022
WEEK FIVE, Zenith Phase Three, Ch. 22 - Zenith Phase Four, Ch. 9
Zenith Phase III, Ch. 22 - Ch. 24: We don’t even see Zenith until the very last chapter here tonight, although he does play a pivotal role. This whole arc was great. Just really well-paced and brimming with Morrison’s interesting superhero fiction ideas. #Zenith2000AD pic.twitter.com/7YOJ2gvnZq

The Epilogue and Interlude IV wrap up Phase III of #Zenith2000AD from Grant Morrison, Steve Yeowell, Jim McCarthy, and Gordon "Kid Robson".
— d. emerson eddy (@93418) March 1, 2022
We get a bit trippy, the heroes go home, and there's a rather sour note out of left field that needs addressing.
tw: transphobia
Everything gets a bit more colourful for Phase IV of #Zenith2000AD with the Prologue through Chapter 3 by Grant Morrison, Steve Yeowell, Gina Hart, and Annie Parkhouse.
— d. emerson eddy (@93418) March 2, 2022
Terrifying futures, horrible pop, 60s nostalgia, crumbling pyramids, and nightmarish children await. pic.twitter.com/ZTqe6wC6uX
Zenith Phase IV, Ch. 4 - Ch. 6: According to our framing advice from the future, in tonight’s comics we witness a very psychedelic and consequential battle that determines the fate of the world. #Zenith2000AD pic.twitter.com/uBgnI1ZUzK
— Comics Bookcase (@ComicsBookcase) March 4, 2022
Everything gets worse, plans are revealed, other superheroes take sides, and, well, things aren't looking so good for humanity. Grant Morrison, Steve Yeowell, Gina Hart, and Annie Parkhouse deliver the goods in chapters 7 through 9 of Phase IV of #Zenith2000AD.
— d. emerson eddy (@93418) March 4, 2022
WEEK SIX, Zenith Phase IV Ch. 10 - Zzzzenith.com
Zenith Phase IV, Ch. 10 - Ch. 12: Our narrator here continues to age downward as St. John and Zenith wage one last battle that the same narrator is already telling us they lose, although I’d reckon all is not what it seems… #Zenith2000AD pic.twitter.com/D0Zx2SVUW8
— Comics Bookcase (@ComicsBookcase) March 8, 2022
It's the end of Phase IV of #Zenith2000AD in chapters 13, 14 and the epilogue. Zenith and Peter are dead. Peyne is regressing further. And the Lloigor are taking over all of reality.
— d. emerson eddy (@93418) March 8, 2022
Jaunty good fun from Grant Morrison, Steve Yeowell, Gina Hart, and Annie Parkhouse.
We close out #Zenith2000AD with https://t.co/3iwaDFCVQy by Grant Morrison, Steve Yeowell, and Ellie De Ville. It's a look at what our heroes are up to in the year 2000.

Also, a bonus prose story by Mark Millar with illustrations by Simon Coleby. About bloody superheroes. pic.twitter.com/ukMILKx2N4
