Top Comics to Buy for September 22, 2021

Batman Secret Files: Miracle Molly #1
Writer:
James Tynion IV
Artist:
DaNi
Colorist:
Lee Loughridge
Letterer:
Tom Napolitano
Publisher:
DC Comics
Since Miracle Molly’s explosive first appearance in the pages of Batman, people have been clamoring to know more about the colorful transhumanist vigilante! Now the wait is over-the history of Gotham’s latest breakout star is revealed! It’s a story so secret even Miracle Molly doesn’t remember it! Discover what led a regular Gothamite to reject their past, name, and humanity to embrace the promise of a blank slate-the promise of the Unsanity Collective! Batman series writer James Tynion IV teams up with rising superstar artist Dani to bring you all the way back to the beginning of Miracle Molly in this exciting and integral Fear State special.
Why It’s Cool:
For my money, the Fear State even so far has been excellent, with a number of disparate perspectives given to a dire Gotham City event. While all of this week’s tie-ins are strong, this one stands out, powered as it is by an interesting character-driven story and absolutely fantastic artwork by DaNi, whose work is always excellent.
Price:
$4.99

Frontiersman #1
Writer:
Patrick Kindlon
Artist:
Marco Ferrari
Letterer:
Jim Campbell
Publisher:
Image Comics
PATIENCE! CONVICTION! REVENGE! PATRICK KINDLON & MARCO FERRARI return with an all-new ONGOING SERIES!
Classic Green Arrow-style adventure blends with the thoughtfulness of Concrete in a superhero odyssey for mature but uncynical readers! Frontiersman is coaxed out of retirement by an environmentalist group, only to find that being a spokesperson makes him a target for old and new enemies alike! For the superhero reader looking for more.

Why It’s Cool:
I may or may not have been clear on this, but Green Arrow is one of my favorite superheroes (if not my favorite), and this is certainly an homage to Green Arrow’s themes and interests. On top of that, it’s beholden to no corporate superhero IP, so that means anything sort of goes with this one. It’s an interesting take on how an old lefty (superhero or otherwise) might fare taking on the issues of the day within the day’s context.

$3.99

Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters #6
Writers:
Chris Samnee and Laura Samnee
Artist:
Chris Samnee
Colorist:
Matthew Wilson
Letterer:
CRANK!
Publisher:
Oni Press
Jonna may be having the time of her life as a newly minted monster-bashing celebrity, but Rainbow finds her experience exploring their new hidden city refuge to be a little less affirming. Wandering the food stalls and back alleys of a teeming underground metropolis isn't so fun when you're super hungry and broke! Plus, we check in on Nomi and Gor as they follow the sisters' path through the ruined wasteland filled with deadly beasts. Another exciting issue of the all-ages hit everyone is talking about!
Why It’s Cool:
If adventure and joy were distilled into a single comic book, it would be this one. This series has been excellent from its start and it remains that way this week with Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters #6.
Price:
$3.99

That Texas Blood #10
Writer:
Chris Condon
Artist:
Jacob Phillips
Publisher:
Image Comics
“EVERSAUL, 1981,” Part Four
A heated argument between Sheriff Cooper and Eversaul leads Joe Bob to make a radical decision to help find the missing girl.
Why It’s Cool:
I am an unabashed That Texas Blood superfan, and I’ve really been enjoying this second arc, which takes the same visuals, sensibilities, and minimalist dialouge from the first arc, and points it to the characters’ past. It’s an interesting way to flesh out a world that was already quite engaging, and this issue continues to reward the audience for coming along. Once again I am grateful for this book — there simply are no bad issues of That Texas Blood. Also, I have no idea how this current arc is going to end and really really like that about this series.

$3.99

United States of Captain America #4
Writer:
Christopher Cantwell with Alyssa Wong
Artist:
Ron Lim with Jodi Nishijima
Colorist:
Matt Milla
Letterer:
Joe Caramagna
Publisher:
Marvel Comics
John Walker (A.K.A. the U.S.Agent) and Bucky Barnes (A.K.A. the Winter Soldier) join the fight against a vicious Captain America impostor and his shadowy patrons. As the chase leads them to interrupt a break-in at one of the most secure facilities in the country, the true magnitude of the forces arrayed against them finally becomes clear. But are they too late to stop what’s already been put in motion? Also introducing Arielle Agbayani, the campus Captain America! When her college turns a blind eye to rich kids behaving badly, she springs into action — and she’s not afraid to fight dirty.
Why It’s Cool:
This series has been such an interesting and refreshing take on Captain America, looking outward in a really modern and expansive way that has led to a whole new sort of Captain America story.
Price:
$4.99
