The Best Wonder Woman #750 Covers (And Why They’re Cool)

By Zack Quaintance — DC’s latest giant-sized anniversary celebration is upon us, with Wonder Woman getting the treatment this month after it was Superman’s turn two years ago with Action Comics #1000 and Batman’s last year with Detective Comics #1000. We’ll have a full review when the big issues hits tomorrow (and you can read why we’re so hyped about it here), but today, we want to look at one of the major selling points of these big books — the covers.

COMIC OF THE WEEK: The Red Mother #2 is very solid horror storytelling

By d. emerson eddy — One of my favorite things in horror is uncertainty. Horror often taps into one of the primal fears, fear of the unknown, fear of that unseen thing lurking on the threshold, but it can also often subvert it. You'll most often see it in the form of other characters disbelieving the weird and supernatural things that beset the protagonist, but sometimes the story goes beyond that. The way that the story is told you can be questioning everything that you see or are told by the author, by the characters, by the atmosphere of the tale. Particularly in a good psychodrama or surrealist horror, you're left wondering if anything is real, something like Carnival of Souls, The Lighthouse, or Jacob's Ladder.

GET HYPED: Wonder Woman #750 looks awesome and important

By Zack Quaintance — Despite DC Comics’ current deluge of giant-sized anniversary celebration issues, I am far more hyped for Wonder Woman #750 (due out this coming Wednesday) than any of the others, even The Flash, which I have traditionally read with much more zeal than Wonder Woman. The main reason being that there’s a bigger sense of gravitas with this book than the others, and there’s layers as to why within that.

3 comics things I like and don't like, including the series vying to be the next Hellboy

By Zack Quaintance — Welcome to another new feature we’re launching for 2020. The hope with this one is that every Friday, I’ll look back at the week in comics (both at the news and the books I read), and list 3 comics things I like and don’t like. Tip of the cap as we get started with this to my favorite writer in the NBA world, Zach Lowe, who does the same thing for basketball but with 10 (!!) things.

COMIC OF THE WEEK: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #101 is a wonderful start to a new era

By d. emerson eddy — Throughout the last year, IDW's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles title has been embroiled in the “City at War” story-arc, a massive arc from Tom Waltz, Dave Wachter, Michael Dialynas, Ronda Pattison, and Shawn Lee that took elements of the story right from the first issue. It was the culmination of eight years of storytelling in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #100, and it was epic. It set up a new status quo and delivered some deeply personal, intriguing ramifications for the Turtles and, really, the rest of the world.

The Saga Re-Read: Saga #54 is the heartbreaking end...for now

By Zack Quaintance — Well folks, this marks the end of our Saga Re-Read Project. I was really hoping the book would have a first issue announced for a comeback at this point, but hey. I saw Brian K. Vaughan at Baltimore Comic-Con, and he said the plan was to basically get the entire next arc in the can before soliciting even the first issue. So, we have no delays to look forward to!

COMIC OF THE WEEK: Hawkeye Freefall #1 is a fun start to an action mystery book

By d. emerson eddy — Matthew Rosenberg has been doing some great work, contributing to some wonderful tales of Marvel's street-level heroes for a while now. His work on The Punisher with Guiu Vilanova, Stefano Landini, and Szymon Kudranski has reintegrated Frank Castle into the framework of a shared universe with superheroes and shown a flair for humor and understanding of those street-level heroes. Likewise, Rosenberg's Tales of Suspense mini-series with Travel Foreman that essentially turned Hawkeye and Winter Soldier into a buddy comedy duo. It was wonderful. So, it's quite nice to see him continue that here in Hawkeye: Freefall #1 as he adds Falcon to the mix as we take a somewhat jaded, cynical view of Hawkeye's capabilities.

I have some exciting and fun things coming up for Comics Anatomy next year, and I can’t wait to share them with you, but until then, let’s talk about Batman

Greg Rucka’s Wonder Woman: Truth, Justice, and the Amazon Way

By Taylor Pechter — Diana of Themyscira (a.k.a. Wonder Woman) is many things: A hero, a warrior, an icon, but most of all, she’s an ambassador...coming to Man’s World to bring love and peace to a society that is often embroiled in violence and war. This side of Diana is explored heavily in what many say is one of — if not the — defining runs on the character, the run of issues that was written by Greg Rucka.

COMIC OF THE WEEK: In Lucifer #15, John Constantine tracks down Lucifer to talk weirdness

By d. emerson eddy — For more than year now, Lucifer has quietly been one of the best horror comics, arguably one of the best comics period, available on the stands. Overall, I think it's probably fair to say that all of the rebooted series in The Sandman Universe have been spinning high quality yarns that go relatively unheralded. Which is a bit of a shame, because they really are damn good. The line got a shot in the arm a little better than a month ago with John Constantine coming home, kind of, and him popping in on the former Vertigo side of things has been a bit of a running theme lately.
