Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — I am not one of those people who are super knowledgeable about the X-Men, and can tell you every last detail about every last mutant who shows up in the background of this new X-Men era. I read X-Men comics all through the mid-to-late ‘90s and early ‘00s, and I’ve read X-Men runs here and there when favorite creators take the reins. But I’m not on X-Twitter and don’t even really know how to find it, and I’m fine with that, as much as it has cost me fame, fortune, and the respect of my peers.
Read MoreBy Isaac Kelly — This week saw the release of the first chapter of “X of Swords” (Pronounced “Ten of Swords''). “X of Swords'' is the first crossover event in this current era of Krakoan X-Books. For those that missed the initial onramp, this event might serve as a jumping-on point for one of the most exciting acts of superhero storytelling that I’ve ever witnessed. For those of us already living in Pax Krakoa, let’s review the story to date. For the rest of you, let’s get you caught up to speed.
Read MoreBy Zach Rabiroff — Benjamin Percy and Joshua Cassara’s X-Force may or may not be the valedictorian of the Dawn of X line, but it’s certainly the most improved student. From its humble beginnings as a somewhat perfunctory entry in the new era of X-Men comics — a healthy, harmless dose of gratuitous violence for those put off by the heady sci-fi meanderings of Jonathan Hickman’s work — it has grown into one of the strongest and most interesting ensemble books coming out of Marvel. Against the odds, a book that seemed to be about blood and guts turns out to be full of heart.
Read MoreX-Men Legacy #300 was the end of an era. The capstone to the second volume of X-Men that had begun back in 1991 with Chris Claremont and Jim Lee, though it was specifically a celebration of the series when it had the X-Men Legacy moniker. Through “Marvel Legacy math”, this anniversary issue included the 24 issues of the second volume of X-Men Legacy, but not any enumeration from volumes three (the vampires) or four (the all-woman team) of the adjectiveless X-Men series. So it stuck with creators most emblematic of the X-Men Legacy era itself to tell this jam issue.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — Intellectually, I keep trying to tone down my excitement whenever one of these new X-Men comics builds (even a little bit) on the ideas that were in this summer’s x-cellent (goddamnit) House of X/Powers of X mini series. It feels unseemly. I’m trying to be analytical here, not gush over the stuff I used to like as a kid coming back now that I’m an adult with (too much?) time on my hands to write about it.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — Welcome once again to the weekly feature named after a mostly bad Red Hot Chili Peppers album, wherein we look at some key panels from this past week of comics. Why are we looking at these panels? It could be the art, it could be the dialogue, it could be a major significant happening. It all depends!
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — Welcome to another new feature we’re launching for 2020. The hope with this one is that every Friday, I’ll look back at the week in comics (both at the news and the books I read), and list 3 comics things I like and don’t like. Tip of the cap as we get started with this to my favorite writer in the NBA world, Zach Lowe, who does the same thing for basketball but with 10 (!!) things.
