Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — Now that we’re roughly a quarter of the way into 2020, we thought it’d be fun to start taking a look at the best comics of 2020 so far, starting with far and away the most prolific comics publisher — Marvel Comics. To that end, below you will find a list of the best comics of 2020 from Marvel so far, with extra attention given to whether a series is easy for new or lapsed readers to hop onto, pick-up, or just generally understand.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — While the debut issues in October probably got more attention, there were also some significant conclusions last month, too. First of hall the Jonathan Hickman-mastermined House of X / Powers of X combo finished its drastic and visionary reinvention of the X-Men line of comics (you know, the one basically everyone is talking about), which paved the way for all those Dawn of X reviews.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — So, I broke the usual rules for this column this month. I actually went with six titles in our top 5 Best New #1 Comics section rather than five. But hey, it’s my website, I don’t have a profit motive with it (and as such am not beholden to anyone anywhere at all, which is a rare thing in 2019 life), and I can do what I like.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — This was a tough month for our committee of one. As I’ll mention later, it’s hard to remember a more hotly contested battle for the top spot. In addition to that, I also struggled harder in this Best Comics of September 2019 piece to narrow down the quick hits section to 10.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — I have a tendency to say this a lot...but the Best New #1 Comics of September 2019 sure were exciting. There’s just a level of craftmanship involved here that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Take a book like Harleen #1. Nothing about the concept really did much for me, not the main character, nor the premise, nor the fact that it was on DC’s increasingly murky Black Label branding. But writer/artist Stejpan Sejic’s execution and craft elevated it to one of the best new comics in ages.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — As I wrote in my column about the Best New #1 Comics of August 2019, to me the story of this month was the glut of excellent new creator-owned books. And it was right in time too! This has been a harsh summer for major creator-owned works ending, with industry tentpoles like The Walking Dead and, to a lesser extent, The Wicked + The Divine finding their conclusions.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — August, obviously, can often feel like the dregs of summer. I think this is true in comics as well. The big summer events are usually ended or ending, delayed like all get out, or giving way to announcements about the new comics that will spin out of whatever craziness just happened. It is, in other words, not always fertile ground for interesting new books.
Read MoreBy Various — The year is nearly half over, which is the timing that we’re using as a justification for doing a Best Comics of 2019 (So Far) list. But also, these type of lists are a lot of fun. There are just so many good comics these days, and it’s a blast to lay them all out, pick favorites, and dive into what makes them so good.
Also, moving forward we’re going to be incorporating our crack team of contributors into even more features than we’ve done in the past. This is one of the first. Here we have favorites picked not only by the editor (me), but by great writers like Ander Lilly, Toren Chenault, Allison Senecal, d. emerson eddy, Taylor Pechter, Jarred A. Luján, and more!
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — Hey all, first off I need to apologize for the tardiness of this column. We’re now three full New Comic Book Days into the month of May, and here I am still writing about my favorite books in April. I do, however, have a legit excuse! I’m in middle of moving across the entire damned country.
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — You know it’s a good month when only one of our Best New #1 Comics of April 2019 has anything to do with superheroes. Why? Because this indicates that there has been a surfeit of great ideas for new creator-owned books, so many in fact that publishers like IDW landed multiple books in our quick hits section…
Read MoreBy Zack Quaintance — It’s one of those rare weeks where the majority of our top picks our superhero books. This doesn’t happen all that often, but we just had to give credit where credit is in this feature for Top Comics to Buy for April 17…
