ADVANCED REVIEW: Twig #1 is 'bright, bustling, mysterious'

By Anna Bailey — There’s a quote from one of my favorite books Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer that stuck in my head while reading Twig #1 by Skottie Young, Kyle Strahm, and team.

“Has there always been someone like me to bury the bodies, to have regrets, to carry on after everyone else was dead?”

Has there always been someone like Twig? Is the world as vast, immense, significant to everyone else as it to Twig? Why is this adventure waiting for Twig? Why Twig? Why?

Writer Skottie Young and artist Kyle Strahm build a unique and vivid story about an unsure creature named Twig, who is on an adventure in a world akin to Labyrinth. In Twig #1, we get a taste of the world — bright, bustling, mysterious, and filled with monsters, monsters that are both friend and foe.

Young’s writing blends seamlessly with Strahm’s work as if the story was always meant to exist. And what I love most about this issue as well as the future of this book, is that it seems to hold so many possibilities. Young has written in so many genres and excels at them all, with a list of highlights that includes I Hate Fairyland, Rocket Raccoon, and, most recently, The Me You Love in the Dark

Twig, perhaps, has a wider appeal than any of those books. Indeed, there’s no doubt that all sorts of comic book readers will love the story of Twig. It’s for fans of Labyrinth, Lord of the Rings, and, like me, Annihilation. You won’t want to miss issue Twig #1, dropping on May 4.

Overall: Skottie Young is adept at imaginative world-building, and his new story, Twig, sees him teaming with artist Kyle Strahm to deliver an interesting book that will appeal to all adventure and fantasy fans. 10/10
