ADVANCED REVIEW: Miranda in the Maelstrom #1

By Ariel Baska — This sweet new science fiction series from Action Lab centers on Miranda, a third-eyed dimension-skipping heroine, utterly devoted to her shark-dog Noodles, who apparently can chew through anything. The set-up appears to be a pretty hilariously science fiction version of Oz, with cyclones of swirling vampire mobsters, mecha warrior foes, and vegan allies. I say “appears to be” because while the tone of this series looks to be sweetly comic, judging from the good-natured dialogue and a palette of orange, pink and purple, don’t judge a book by its cover. Sweet Heart by Gilbertson, Iaquinta - REVIEW

By Zack Quaintance — If I can recall correctly (always a big if), I read the first issue of Sweet Heart more than a year ago, before this horror series from writer Dillon Gilbertson and artist Francesco Iaquinta was picked up by publisher Action Lab. At that time, I was right away struck by how this was a well-crafted horror comic, but more than that, it was a well-crafted horror comic that engaged in quite a bit of mythos and world-building.

REVIEW: Going to the Chapel #4 is a sweet and fitting finale

By Zack Quaintance — It’s been a long week for me (filled with day job work travel...sort of), so I’m going to start this review of Going to the Chapel #4 with a summary of this series that I wrote for this week’s Top Comics to Buy feature: Simply put, this book is hilarious, combining a gangster heist story with the already-loaded relationship drama inherent to a wedding, mixing together zany family members, past relationships, and plenty of other volatile elements.
