REVIEW: Something is Killing the Children #10

Something is Killing the Children #10 is out September 9, 2020.

By Larry Jorash — Many of us harbor fears of feeling helpless. It’s a fear manifests as we experience stories, worrying that saviors like daylight, armor, or a stake to the heart just won’t save the day this time. It’s a fear of a terrifying inevitability, and it’s a theme we tap into deeply in Something is Killing the Children #10.

Having your parents right next to you and still being vulnerable is a deep childhood trauma most of us can relate to as well, and it’s things like these that writer James Tynion IV has tapped into as he works to make us afraid. Being an adult yourself and seeing evil when others can’t is also a fear to which most of us can relate. And losing multiple loved ones in close proximity is just the most devastating type of loss, one that unfortunately some of us both know and fear. This book does not and has not pulled punches; so be forewarned before continuing onward with this book if you are easily nauseated.

Miquel Muerto’s coloring in this issue is heavy on red ink, while Werther Dell’edera’s pencils in some scenes will cause readers to shudder, heavy as they are with mutilation and carnage. At this point in the story, the monsters that we’re now dealing with aren’t babies any longer—and full-grown monsters have larger stomachs.

When storytelling is at its best we feel something, and this issue will play on emotions at multiple levels. Our narration is moving full steam ahead at this juncture and the cliffhangers continue to grow in magnitude and consequence. Buy the ticket, take the ride.

Overall: This issue is action-packed and fun. A coming-together of multiple arcs and a satisfying read. Erica Slaughter is a hero we can all get behind and relate to, and anyone who enjoys horror comics should have this book in their pullbox. 9/10
