REVIEW: Decorum #3 by Hickman and Huddleston

Decorum #3 is out July 22, 2020.

By Larry Jorash — Decorum is a book without traditional narration or linear plot. Jonathan Hickman seems to have inspired himself within the confines of Marvel’s 2019 blockbusters, House of X, and Powers of X. We see a similar tendency to craft worlds and overload information at a high pace; thrusting readership into the metaphorical deep end and expecting us to learn to swim as we tread water. Without the shackles of prior storytelling to satisfy, Hickman has been unleashed onto a blank canvas and his imagination has exploded to cover it.

We see the desserts of the constant mystery surrounding our narration begin to pay off in this third installment. The issue begins with some witty banter between the vulgar damsel in distress, Neha Nori Sood, and her polite assassin savior, Ms. Morley. As their conversation unfolds we discover the planet Bys and take a trip across various art styled landscapes until the Sisterhood of Man is brought into our story. From here on out the madness and glorious, multi-dimensional colorwork takes ahold of our eyes and our subconscious.

Fans of this title will enjoy the fun additions to the character roster we gain as Neha Nori Sood auditions for this school for assassins. As previously, each chapter’s various and changing artwork plays a key role in setting the tone changes of this title. The designs of Sasha E Head are also incredibly attractive aesthetically. We know the universe we reside in is vast, strange, and possibly still not fully understood and yet the welcoming nature of the banter and color work asks us to stay and enjoy our visit.

While the overload of information and constantly shifting art style may be distracting to some, the depth of this book and the vivid imagery is something worth coming back for.

Overall: The direction we’re headed in is still very much  a mystery but it is clear that we have large scale designs ahead of us with this one. The combination of Hickman and Huddleston continues to be a big win for Image. 8.5/10
