Top Comics to Buy for June 10, 2020

To be sure, we’re still not there yet, but both Marvel Comics and DC Comics have a healthy set of forthcoming titles, which goes a long way to restoring normalcy.
With that in mind, let’s check out our Top Comics to Buy for June 10, 2020. Enjoy!

Why It’s Cool: There are a number of excellent stories from excellent creators, some of whom are new and welcome when it comes to lending their perspective to Batman. Moreover, this is maybe the longest we’ve gone in my lifetime without new Batman comics, and so this week’s barrage of Batman Secret Files #3, Batman #92, and The Batman’s Grave #7 is ending a very rare Batman drought. And you know what? This set of stories is the best of the bunch. There’s not really a bad one in here, but my personal favorite was the piece by Dan Watters and John Paul Leon, which is just about as timely as it gets.

Why It’s Cool: Visionary sci-fi writer Jonathan Hickman is back with a new visionary sci-fi comic, teaming with visionary comics artist Mike Huddleston. That’s a whole lot of vision, but the main takeaway here is that this is a talented team making new and original sci-fi comics that are absolutely not to be missed.

Why It’s Cool: Every new issue of Ice Cream Man feels like an event, and this one is no different. Consistently throughout the life of this series, writer W. Maxwell Prince and artist Martin Morazzo have challenged themselves to translate a horror sensibility that springs from the day-to-day of regular life into a series of formalist experiments. This issue is told in the form of a how-to guide, how to be a ghost (to be exact), and it’s a powerful conceit given the subject matter it tackles.

Kill Lock #5

Run down. Beat up. On their last legs. The Linked know that this is their final chance to find a cure for The Kill Lock. Face-to-face with the last hope for salvation, will it be relief or pain? If one dies... they all do.
Why It’s Cool: This comic has just been a masterclass of character development from its start, depicting a number of recognizable and universal very human flaws through a series of non-human robots. In this penultimate issue, we get the first steps to the endgame, and the tension and choices within feel earned and powerful. This is really a must-read original comic, and perhaps one that deserves quite a bit more buzz circulating around it.

No One’s Rose #2

Why It’s Cool: We absolutely loved the first issue of No One’s Rose, a new title from Vault Comics. Unfortunately, the recent COVID-19 crisis meant that there has been a significant gap between the debut and the sophomore issue, but now that it’s arrived, we’re sure glad to see it. No One’s Rose is a high-ambition, high-concept sci-fi solar punk story that takes a more optimistic look toward the future of our current ongoing environmental crises, making it both compelling and timely.

Why It’s Cool: You can read Kirin Xin’s full review of 920London here, but, in short, this is a compelling and character-driven story steeped in early 2000s culture, featuring brilliant watercolor artwork and a nudge of a furry twist. Image is releasing more graphic novels of late, and works like this sure make us glad that they are.
