Top Comics to Buy for July 7, 2021

By Zack Quaintance — I have no idea what the practical reason is for this, but over the years I’ve noticed that the Wednesday after Fourth of July always seems to be a GIANT release week for new comics, which is certainly the case this year as evidenced by our list of Top Comics to Buy for July 7, 2021. It’s a good list too, with some new types of comics for the direct market, one notable new format, and an old standby (Batman!) that continues to be excellent. You can check out our full list of picks below.

Enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for July 7, 2021

PICK OF THE WEEK
Batman #110
Writer:
James Tynion IV
Artist: Jorge Jimenez
Colorist: Tomeu Morey
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: DC Comics
Main: Batman’s bloody, no-holds-barred fight with Magistrate enforcer Peacekeeper-01 rages on in epic fashion! Simon Saint’s master plan comes to fruition as his Magistrate program makes its move on Gotham City, and things are about to heat up! (Not in a good way!)
Backup: The Instigator versus Ghost-Maker in a kung fu showdown! Need we say more?
Why It’s Cool: It’s still young yet (relative to other main Batman title runs), but these James Tynion/Jorge Jimenez comics are shaping up to be another classic run for one of all superhero comics’ flagship titles. And friends? This is the best issue yet, a perfectly-paced, tense romp through the plot points Tynion and co. have set up, all that play well with the terrifying alternate status quo readers were threatened with in Future State. It’s a good time to be a fan of Batman comics, and issues like this demonstrate why.

$4.99

Mamo #1
Writer:
Sas Milledge
Artist: Sas Milledge
Letterer: Sas Milledge
Publisher: BOOM! Studios - BOOM! Box
BOOM! Studios is proud to showcase the incredible artistic vision of Sas Milledge!
Can Orla O'Reilly embrace her destiny in order to bridge the divide between humanity and the faerie world?
Orla, the youngest in a long line of hedge witches, finds herself pulled back to her hometown after the death of her grandmother -- Mamo.
Without Mamo managing magical relationships between the townsfolk and the fae, the seas are impossible to fish, the crops have soured... and Jo Manalo's attic has been taken over by a poltergeist!
Now, Orla and Jo will both be pulled into worlds they never wanted to be part of. Can the two girls work together to save the town?
Sas Milledge (The Lost Carnival: A Dick Grayson Graphic Novel) debuts her first original series perfect for fans of The Last Witch and Sabrina The Teenage Witch that answers the question of how we all reconcile our responsibilities with our dreams for our own future.
Why It’s Cool: Sas Milledge is a mightly talented creator, one whom I first became familiar with through the DC Comics young readers graphic novel, The Lost Carnival (which was written by Michael Moreci). In the new series Mamo, Milledge’s ample talents are on full display, as they create an ethereal coming of age story that feels like some of the best of the original graphic novel for YA (and older) readers has finally started to come to the direct market in earnest. This is a great one to pick up if you haven’t broken into those books, or if you have and enjoy the periodical format for which this story is built.

The Nice House on the Lake #2
Writer:
James Tynion IV
Artist: Alvaro Matrinez Bueno
Colorist: Jordie Bellaire
Letterer: Andworld Design
Publisher: DC Comics - Black Label
After the life-changing events of the previous issue, the guests at the nice house on the lake must decide their next steps-but there’s not exactly perfect agreement about the situation. Who among them is ready to walk out the door? And who is content to simply…float?
Why It’s Cool: The Nice House On The Lake #1 was so good that we gave it one of only three perfect 10 scores for 2021 so far, and you know what? While the absolutely unstoppable momentum of the debut issue has cooled ever so slightly, this second issue is really really good, keeping this series as one of the most interesting new comics of the year. Don’t miss it.
Price:
$3.99

Skybound X #1
Writers:
Chris Dingess, James Harren, Robert Kirkman, Tillie Walden
Artists: James Harren, Ryan Otley, Matthew Roberts, Tillie Walden
Publisher: Image Comics - Skybound
Celebrate a sensational 10 years of Skybound with a cavalcade of your favorite creators and all-new stories of your favorite series past, present, and future! Each issue of this oversized, weekly series will kick off with a new chapter of a serialized THE WALKING DEAD story—RICK GRIMES 2000—by ROBERT KIRKMAN & RYAN OTTLEY!
In addition, we’ll be debuting all-new series and characters every issue, starting with the first appearance of the most requested WALKING DEAD character of all-time: Clementine, star of the bestselling Telltale’s The Walking Dead video game series!
Did we mention new ULTRAMEGA and MANIFEST DESTINY stories?! If you want to know what to expect in Skybound’s next 10 years, it all starts here!
Why It’s Here: This new series combines two things I like a lot — anthology comics and the madcap storytelling sensibilities of the Image Comics imprint, Skybound. Each chapter (this one included) starts with a new Walking Dead comic from Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley, and then from there it goes into a really interesting grab bag of cool comics stuff. In Skybound #1, that means Tillie Walden (!!) doing a Clementine Walking Dead comic, as well as a new Ultramega story. Sounds FANTASTIC.

The Wrong Earth: Night and Day #5
Writer:
Tom Peyer
Artist: Jamal Igle
Inker: Juan Castro
Colorist: Andy Troy
Letterer: Rob Steen
Publisher: AHOY Comics
Earth-Omega's Dragonfly and Earth-Alpha's Dragonflyman battle Earth-Zeta's Man-Dragonfly! Could a comic book be any more like a comic book? Plus, illustrated prose, AHOY-style!
Why It’s Cool: It’s just more excellent satirical hi-jinx from one of the best parody comics to come to superhero comics in years. In this issue, get a third variation of Dragonfly Man, which is definitely NOT Dragonfly Man Beyond. It’s just another great issue for this concept, filled with fun moments as the story moves ahead. After this one, there’s only one issue to go in this great extension of these characters and this world.
