By Zack Quaintance — I have no idea what the practical reason is for this, but over the years I’ve noticed that the Wednesday after Fourth of July always seems to be a GIANT release week for new comics, which is certainly the case this year as evidenced by our list of Top Comics to Buy for July 7, 2021. It’s a good list too, with some new types of comics for the direct market, one notable new format, and an old standby (Batman!) that continues to be excellent. Top Comics to Buy for July 7, 2021

Main: Batman’s bloody, no-holds-barred fight with Magistrate enforcer Peacekeeper-01 rages on in epic fashion! Simon Saint’s master plan comes to fruition as his Magistrate program makes its move on Gotham City, and things are about to heat up! (Not in a good way!)
Backup: The Instigator versus Ghost-Maker in a kung fu showdown! Need we say more?
Why It’s Cool: It’s still young yet (relative to other main Batman title runs), but these James Tynion/Jorge Jimenez comics are shaping up to be another classic run for one of all superhero comics’ flagship titles. And friends? This is the best issue yet, a perfectly-paced, tense romp through the plot points Tynion and co. have set up, all that play well with the terrifying alternate status quo readers were threatened with in Future State. It’s a good time to be a fan of Batman comics, and issues like this demonstrate why.

Why It’s Cool: Sas Milledge is a mightly talented creator, one whom I first became familiar with through the DC Comics young readers graphic novel, The Lost Carnival (which was written by Michael Moreci). In the new series Mamo, Milledge’s ample talents are on full display, as they create an ethereal coming of age story that feels like some of the best of the original graphic novel for YA (and older) readers has finally started to come to the direct market in earnest. This is a great one to pick up if you haven’t broken into those books, or if you have and enjoy the periodical format for which this story is built.

The Nice House on the Lake #2

Why It’s Cool: The Nice House On The Lake #1 was so good that we gave it one of only three perfect 10 scores for 2021 so far, and you know what? While the absolutely unstoppable momentum of the debut issue has cooled ever so slightly, this second issue is really really good, keeping this series as one of the most interesting new comics of the year. Don’t miss it.

In this issue, get a third variation of Dragonfly Man, which is definitely NOT Dragonfly Man Beyond. It’s just another great issue for this concept, filled with fun moments as the story moves ahead. After this one, there’s only one issue to go in this great extension of these characters and this world.
