Top Comics to Buy for September 8, 2021

By Zack Quaintance — Well folks, running a little bit behind this week with the top comics to buy for September 8, 2021 reading list, largely on account of having to drive like 1,500 miles this past weekend. But! Nevertheless, the list is here, and it just so happens to include some of my favorite comics right now, as well as a new series launch that felt especially strong.

Check it out in full below!

Top Comics to Buy for September 8, 2021

PICK OF THE WEEK
Deadbox #1
Writer
: Mark Russell
Artist: Benjamin Tiesma
Colorist:
Vladimir Popov
Letterer:
AndWorld
Publisher:
Vault Comics
Welcome to the town of Lost Turkey, where the main source of entertainment is a cursed DVD machine that seems to know more about the fate of its citizens than they do.
Why It’s Cool:
This has been a fantastic year for new Vault Comics, with Barbaric and The Blue Flame specifically numbering among my favorite titles of the year. Well, now there is another — this week’s Deadbox #1 by Mark Russell, Benjamin Tiesma, Vladimir Popov, and AndWorld Design is an excellent horror-tinged book about the power that stories hold in our lives. As writer Mark Russell told us in an advanced interview about Deadbox, the closest thing he has to a religion is stories, and really, this book does some fascinating things as it unpacks that. This is a must-read title.

Eve #5
Writer:
Victor LaValle
Artist:
Jo Mi-Gyeong
Colorist:
Brittany Peer
Letterer:
AndWorld Design
Publisher:
BOOM! Studios
Will Eve finally fulfill her destiny as humanity's last hope? Eve's long journey is coming to a head as she finally arrives at the Vault, which is now sunk deep below the ocean surface off the coast of Washington State. But what, or who, she finds within will either lead Eve to complete the most important mission of all time... or complete the world's destruction. The epic conclusion to the dystopian fable no comic reader can afford to miss!
Why It’s Cool:
This entire season has just been a standout dystopian fable centered around the journey of a fantastic lead character and her powerful borderline frenemy robot housed in the body of a teddy bear. It’s got great themes, intriguing ideas, and really striking imagery that will linger with you long after you’ve finished this comic. It also really sticks the landing, something that’s often a challenge for a story that has been this strong from one chapter to the next.

Infinite Frontier #6
Writer:
Joshua Williamson
Artist:
Xermanico
Colorist:
Romula Fajardo, Jr.
Letterer:
Tom Napolitano
Publisher:
DC Comics
One story ends and the next phase of the DC Multiverse begins. We have one name for you: DARKSEID. Our heroes knew that someone had been pulling the strings this entire time, but are they prepared for it to be the biggest bad of all? As President Superman, Alan Scott, Roy Harper, and the rest converge for a showdown, the secret of Omega Planet is revealed. Plus, Barry Allen is put on a path he may never get off!
Why It’s Cool:
I am always game for a good bit of DC Multiverse madcap silliness, and that’s exactly what this six-part series has served up. Essentially, this book is aimed at letting readers know that A. the DC multiverse is back and it’s going to figure prominently into the publisher’s biggest stories moving forward, and B. the publisher is also making a new recharged effort to use its excellent deep bench of characters. The combination of those two things is absurdist and compelling and a good example of what a big superhero summer event should be.

$4.99

Ka-Zar: Lord of the Savage Land #1
Writer:
Zac Thompson
Artist:
German Garcia
Colorist:
Matheus Lopes
Letterer:
Joe Caramagna
Publisher:
Marvel Comics
KA-ZAR IS BACK FROM THE DEAD — WITH A WHOLE NEW TERRIFYING SET OF POWERS! The alien Cotati murdered him. The Savage Land brought him back. Lord Plunder has returned — with a vastly new perspective! Now united with Shanna the She-Devil in a mystical merging of life energies, Ka-Zar has new abilities, new needs…and new enemies. An ancient evil has surfaced in the Savage Land — one that is rapidly reshaping the forgotten world and its inhabitants. Ka-Zar and Shanna must fight together to protect their home and family! But their son Matthew has plans of his own… Don’t miss this spectacular adventure through the lost lands by Zac Thompson and Germán García!
Why It’s Cool:
I have long been a big fan of the work of both of these creators, and the combination of the two in this new series is excellent. It’s kind of an interesting new take on Ka-Zar, one that sees him and Shanna facing off against an ancient evil. It’s the type of book that both serves as a fine introduction to this characters as well as a compelling refresh for anyone with pre-existing familiarity, using the eco-horror themes Thompson has explored to great success in some of his creator-owned comics work as well. I highly recommend it.

Wasted Space #23
Writer:
Michael Moreci
Artist:
Hayden Sherman
Colorist:
Jason Wordie
Letterer:
Jim Campbell
Publisher:
Vault Comics
Just three issues remain in the landmark sci-fi series. Molly has a profound and pivotal encounter with Legion, while Billy and Dust...get distracted picking up a space hitchhiker and arguing about love between friends.
Why It’s Cool:
If I’ve written it on this website once, I’ve written it several dozen times — Wasted Space is the best space opera in contemporary comics, and now it’s hurdling toward its conclusion, with this being its third to last issue. Things are certainly coming to a head here, but the book hasn’t let up with any of the humor, philosophy, or fantastic artwork courtesy of Sherman and Wordie that has made it such a refreshing series since its launch. This is a nice long run for an independent series, and Wasted Space deserves all of it.

$3.99
