Publisher:
DC Comics
The next chapter of the Warworld Saga begins! Following the first victory by Superman and the Phaelosians, the Warworld Rebellion has begun. But Mongul has become more merciless than ever, cracking down on his enemies with unspeakable cruelty. With Superman’s people suffering and his options dwindling, his thoughts turn to the mythical necropolis that supposedly lies at the heart of Warworld. Superman’s epic space adventure continues in this new arc! Then, in Myth of the Mongul, journey back to the origin of the first Mongul in history…and uncover deadly secrets that could spell certain doom for Superman and his revolution!
Why It’s Cool: I have written in the past about why this Action Comics storyline whips ass, so I’ll limit this blurb to why this particular issues whips ass — it doubles down on the gritty sci-fi gladiator action while also revealing more about the backstory of what’s going on here. I remain absolutely thrilled by this run of Action Comics, which is among the best monthly books being published by DC.

Department of Truth #18
Writer:
James Tynion IV
Artist:
Martin Simmonds
Letterer:
Aditya Bidikar
Publisher:
Image Comics
NEW STORY ARC
Co-creator MARTIN SIMMONDS returns for the explosive new arc of the Eisner-nominated hit! For decades, THE DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH battled a secret war against its Soviet counterpart, THE MINISTRY OF LIES. Now Cole Turner will have to face the consequences of his predecessors as the dark actions of the past unfurl before him...
Why It’s Cool: I’ve made no secret that The Department of Truth is one of my favorite monthly comic books of recent years, and after a stint of fantastic guests artists, Martin Simmonds rejoins the team here for a fantastic issue that reaches back into the mythos of the world where this book exists. Perhaps the best thing I can say about this book and this issue is that it all makes me feel like the first issue came out yesterday, I blinked, and now here we are, my interest not diminished at all.

The mega corporation Synastry Designs wants its data back and is hot on her trail. Aurora has no choice but to turn to the Fox and the Hare, the most feared mercenaries in the city, for protection.
Why It’s Cool: This comic will hit you like a kick to the chest. It’s a fast-paced and stylish action comic romp that will grab you from the start and take off running. Plus the title on this one is about as cool as it gets.

Pearl III #1
Writer:
Brian Michael Bendis
Artist:
Michael Gaydos
Letterer:
Joshua Reed
Publisher:
Dark Horse Comics - Jinxworld
A brand-new, (yes, all new!) chapter in the tattoo artist, Yakuza assassin romantic odyssey . . . Pearl. that's right, the critically acclaimed Jinxworld title makes its Dark Horse debut with a brand-new chapter in the wild life of Pearl Tanaka.
Fully painted by award-winning graphic novelist Michael Gaydos, Pearl is a very unique experience about an artist discovering all the secrets of the modern yakuza world she was born into by no fault of her own. After finding out the truth about her parents in previous volumes, the real question is, "Who is the ghost dragon of San Francisco?"

Why It’s Cool: From the start, Pearl has been an absolutely gorgeous series, armed as it is with stunning, fully-painted comics artwork by Michael Gaydos. It’s not an exageration to say that there really isn’t another comic that looks quite like this one. I was also impressed with how seemlessly the story picks up and reminds readers about everything that has taken place to lead to this point.

Saga #59
Writer:
Brian K. Vaughan
Artist:
Fiona Staples
Letterer:
Fonografiks
Publisher:
Image Comics
What the hell does this fish have to do with the people who want Hazel dead? Find out this May as the strangest epic in comics continues-somehow still only $2.99!
Why It’s Cool: Saga is another one of my favorite comics (and part of the reason this site exists), and I have absolutely been loving this book since it returned from it’s too-long hiatus in January. I haven’t read this issue yet (Saga is never made available for review until the day of release), but it gets extra points from me for having one of those intriguing and weird Saga covers.
