Why It’s Cool: In my lifetime, perhaps no other superhero writer has been as influential and visionary as Grant Morrison. While their most-recent work on Green Lantern has been firmly part of the inaccessible Morrison cycle, it’s also said to be their final work on monthly corporate superhero comics. Normally, I wouldn’t believe that sort of thing, but it does seem like all of Morrison’s friends and contemporaries at DC Comics have left the building, making it all the more likely. Whatever the case, if this is Morrison’s last hurrah with a corporate-owned superhero, it’s not one to be missed, brought to life with the chilling intense visuals of Liam Sharp in a series that is as intriguing as it is bewildering. Try to look away, I dare you.

Why It’s Cool: This series has really been one-of-a-kind, a mash-up of familiar modern teenage punk rock ethos with familiar trappings of the horror genre in a way that makes each feel new. Watters is a powerful and patient writer, and Wijngaard is a visionary artist. They both shine here, but Wijngaard in particular gets a chance to show off his vast and imaginative talents with the visuals that this week’s script enables. If you’ve been following this series, there are some plot revelations. If you haven’t, this is still a tour de force in graphic sequential storytelling.

Here, he takes up his pen for an edgy new FIVE-PART SERIES about a highly unconventional angel named Karmen and the young woman she takes under her wing when a case of heartbreak strikes hard. Packed with surprises and metaphysics, this gorgeously drawn series deploys tenderness and humor as it dives deep into topics that matter.
Why It’s Cool: I’m going to be blunt and honest with this one — I don’t know if I liked Karmen #1. That is to say, I don’t know if I’m going to end up liking it when this story is wrapped up. There are some rough spots and some rough choices made here. That said, this is a relentlessly-interesting first issue, and one that I found compulsively readable, if a bit cringe-inducing at times. The artwork is also very Very good.

Why It’s Cool: As Grant Morrison’s time in monthly corporate superhero comics comes to end, the iconic writer transitions to a new series — Proctor Valley Road, on which team with fellow writer Alex Child, artist Naomi Franquiz, colorist Tamra Bonvillain, and letterer Jim Campbell. This is perhaps one of Morrison’s unlikeliest works to date, a misfit teenagers story that is very much part of a late career cycle. It is, however, just as well-done as any recent Morrison work and not to be missed.

Why It’s Cool: You all, I think Hayden Sherman (colored here by Jason Wordie…who deserves an Eisner!) has ascended to the throne of the best sci-fi artist in all of monthly comics. The work Sherman has put forward in this most recent story arc of Wasted Space (comics best space opera) has just been staggering, and it somehow feels like it’s continuing to get better. This issue is as gorgeous as any in the series, and not to be missed.
