Top Comics to Buy for December 1, 2021
By Zack Quaintance — The Top Comics to Buy for December 1, 2021 are a superhero-heavy bunch of books, headlined by a continuation of the main Hellboy narrative and some long-coming DC Comics entries. Or at least one, anyway, which is Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons #1, a book I feel like I’ve been waiting for for about three years. And I’ll elaborate more below, but friends? It does not disappoint.
Read on for our full list, and enjoy!
Top Comics to Buy for December 1, 2021
PICK OF THE WEEK
Sir Edward Grey Acheron #1 (One-Shot)
Writer: Mike Mignola
Artist: Mike Mignola
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Letterer: Clem Robbins
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Hellboy is gone, and the B.P.R.D. managed to fight off the monsters on earth long enough for humanity to just barely escape underground, but Edward Grey must return to Hell to confront a familiar foe and finish what needs to be done to truly save the world. Continuing after B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know ended in 2019, this one-shot is written and drawn completely by Mignola with colorist Dave Stewart, featuring a cover by Mignola and Stewart. A full issue written and drawn solely by Mignola!
Why It’s Cool: This is the first Hellboy comic that Mike Mignola has written and illustrated himself in five years. Five years! And if that weren’t enough, it’s also the first comic set after the events of The Devil You Know, which put an ending of sorts of the main Hellboy narrative. Will we move somewhere else narratively here? This book is poised to answer that question…
Price: $3.99

Action Comics #1037
Writer: Phillip Kennedy Johnson with Shawn Aldridge
Artist: Miguel Mendoca with Adriana Melo
Colorist: Adriano Lucas with Hi-Fi
Letterer: Dave Sharpe
Publisher: DC Comics
The Warworld Saga, Part II, and THE FACE-OFF YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR! SUPERMAN AND THE AUTHORITY finally face MONGUL and his champions head-on! The fates of Warworld and all who live under Mongul’s rule hang in the balance…but He Who Holds All Chains is better prepared than Superman knows. Not everyone walks away from this one!
Why It’s Cool: Superman teaming up with The Authority — a superhero team concept that was very much of its time in the early 2000s — was outwardly a head scratcher. But after Grant Morrison and co. launched them with a miniseries, the Action Comics team has made such great work of it. This second issue is even better than the first, delivering a gritty sci-fi deep space gladiator story filled with surprises and twists at every turn. These comics are very good.

Justice League Incarnate #1
Writer: Joshua Williamson and Dennis Culver
Artist: Brandon Peterson, Andrei Bressan, Tom Derenick
Colorist: Hi-Fi
Letterer: Tom Napolitano
Publisher: DC Comics
After the shocking ending of Infinite Frontier, Justice League Incarnate defends the Multiverse from Darkseid across infinite Earths! Following a devastating defeat at the hands of the one true Darkseid, the Superman of Earth-23 leads a team of superheroes from myriad worlds that includes Flashpoint Batman, China’s Flash from Earth-0, Captain Carrot from Earth-26, and the brand new superhero DR. MULTIVERSE from Earth-8 in a last ditch effort to stop the end of every possible universe as we know it! Written by Joshua Williamson and Dennis Culver with first-issue art by Brandon Peterson and Andrei Berssan and a rotating cast of artists exploring the many different worlds of the DC Multiverse, this can’t-miss series is the next thrilling chapter in the Infinite Frontier saga!
Why It’s Cool: DC Comics continues to deliver a pulpy multiversal romp that pulls from many of its past stories to create a mosaic of something fun, interesting, and new. This book is a bit cheeky — there’s a Darkseid and Thanos analog battle — but it never tips over into camp. This story — which continues the Infinite Frontier mini — also feels like a driving force for DC’s current line, making it all the strogner.

Venom #2
Writers: Al Ewing and Ram V.
Artist: Bryan Hitch
Inker: Andrew Currie
Colorist: Alex Sinclair
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: DC Comics
The tour de force of comics awesomeness brought to you by the dynamite new creative team on VENOM continues! VENOM #1 shocked, intrigued and terrified you! With Ram V and Al Ewing weaving a mind-bending story that will push Eddie and Dylan Brock to their limits, and Bryan Hitch doing some of the most action-packed work of his career, VENOM #2 will do all that AND MORE!
Why It’s Cool: This new Venom comic doesn’t seem like it should work. It’s yet another sort of reinvention for a character that is essentially a dark mirror version of Spider-Man. It also follows a run that made said character a space god. And yet, the new creators here — an A+ lineup of Al Ewing, Ram V., and Bryan Hitch — are doing incredible things on this run. Or at least, they did with the first issue, and we see no reason that would change for issue #2.

Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons #1
Writer: Kelly Sue DeConnick
Artist: Phil Jimenez
Colorists: Hi-Fi, Arif Prianto, and Romulo Fajardo, Jr.
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: DC Comics - Black Label
The wait is over, and the entire story of the Amazons can finally be told! Millennia ago, Queen Hera and the goddesses of the Olympian pantheon grew greatly dissatisfied with their male counterparts…and far from their sight, they put a plan into action. A new society was born, one never before seen on Earth, capable of wondrous and terrible things…but their existence could not stay secret for long. When a despairing woman named Hippolyta crossed the Amazons’ path, a series of events was set in motion that would lead to an outright war in heaven-and the creation of the Earth’s greatest guardian! Legendary talents Kelly Sue DeConnick and Phil Jimenez unleash a reading experience the likes of which you’ve never seen, with unbelievably sumptuous art and a story that will haunt you-with subsequent issues featuring art by modern masters Gene Ha and Nicola Scott! One of the most unforgettable DC tales of all time begins here!
Why It’s Cool: I might be wrong, but I’m fairly certain this title was one of those announced along with the creation of the Black Label imprint way back when. Whatever the case, I have been excited about it for years, and now that it’s here, I’m happy to say it more than delivers. Writer Kelly Sue DeConnick does a great job here with a complex and well-structured script that does something very difficult, taking a 20,000-foot view to the place of Amazons within the fabric of reality. And it’s all brought to life by career-best artwork from the absurdly-talented Phil Jimenez (and a trio of colorists). You will not find a more visual lush comic experience this year.
