Best comiXology Sales: Recent Joker comics are good, actually

By Zack Quaintance — So, if you’ve followed the comics news, you might be wondering if comiXology’s website is going away soon. As the company announced, this was originally set to happen by the end of September, with the comiXology app living on with new features as the webstore was rolled into parent company, amazon.com. Things are apparently running behind, and so we’ll plug on with this feature.

And this week’s list of best comiXology sales has not one but two (two!) comics featuring the Joker. This may come as a surprise, but here’s the thing — recent Joker comics are good, actually. But you can read more about that below on the list proper…enjoy!

The Joker #1 - The Joker #3
Writer:
James Tynion IV
Artist: Guillem March
Publisher: DC Comics
Following the events of Infinite Frontier #1, The Joker is the most wanted man in the world! But the Clown Prince of Crime is several steps ahead of law enforcement—and he's on the run overseas.
Why It’s Cool: Look, I’ll be totally honest here — I was ready to hate this comic as soon as it was announced. We’d had years of a Jokerized Batman terrorizing the entire DCU, followed by a Batman event around the character (see the next entry on this list). I had Joker burnout, but here’s the thing — this book isn’t about the Joker, not really. It’s about Jim Gordon going international to hunt The Joker, and that makes all the difference. Instead of a grimdark book about a murderous clown, we get a book about the ripple effect of the Joker’s impact on the world, mostly through the lens of Gordon. We also get more fallout from the A-Day plot line in the main Batman book, which is really interesting. Overall, this is just one damn fine comic, and I bet reading the first three issues (all of which are on sale now) will hook any skeptics.
Price: $1.99 or $2.99 per issue; or $7.97 for the first three issues

The Joker War Saga
Writers:
James Tynion IV with John Ridley, Joshua Williamson and Peter J. Tomasi
Artists: Jorge Jimenez, Guillem March, Carlo Pagulayan and more
Publisher: DC Comics
The summer 2020 blockbuster “The Joker War” is collected in this new hardcover that includes the tie-in chapters starring Batgirl, Red Hood, Nightwing, Catwoman, and, of course, Harley Quinn! As the Clown Prince of Crime battles the Dark Knight Detective head-to-head one last time. The Joker has never wanted to win before-he’s never wanted his battle with Batman to end. But now his motivation has shifted.
This collection features the Joker’s confrontation with Batgirl; his manipulation of the amnesiac Nightwing; and a turf war between Gotham City’s many evildoers! Plus, the debut of Clownhunter, a cameo by Ghost-Maker, and an epic battle between Harley Quinn and Punchline!
Collects Batman #95-100, Batgirl #47, Detective Comics #1025, Red Hood: Outlaw #48, Nightwing #74, The Joker War Zone #1, plus stories from Harley Quinn #75 and Catwoman #25.
Why It’s Cool: In a lot of ways, this is the story arc that setup the new status quo being explored in the (very good) main Batman comics right now, laying the groundwork for a lot of what was to come in the current event, Fear State. Sure, you can read Fear State without knowing this story, but why not fill in some of the background? Plus, these comics are pretty good.
Price: $12.99

My Hero Academia, Vol. 1 - Vol. 5
Writer:
Kohei Horikoshi
Artist: Kohei Horikoshi
Publisher: Viz
The secrets of the smash-hit series My Hero Academia are revealed! My Hero Academia: Ultra Analysis -- The Official Character Guide is jam-packed with all the profiles, stats, and trivia about your favorite heroes -- plus a color art gallery, sketches, and a team-up discussion featuring My Hero Academia creator Kohei Horikoshi in conversation with Bleach creator Tite Kubo!
Why It’s Cool: Regular readers of this column will know that I typically like to include one book or series that I’ve been meaning to read for a good while but haven’t yet. Well friends, this week that pick is My Hero Academia. I’m finally going to figure out what the kids are into, and I’m going to do it by buying the first five volumes of this book on sale and keeping them until (a much) later date.
Price: $4.99 each or $24.95 for all five

Wolverine by Claremont and Miller
Writer:
Chris Claremont
Artist: Frank Miller
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Collects Wolverine (1982) #1-4. He's the best there is at what he does but what he does best isn't very nice! Logan goes solo in Japan for the love of his life. It's ninjas, claws, and blood as only everyone's favorite mutant can deliver!
Why It’s Cool: This is one of the most formative runs of Wolverine comics, laid out by a pair of all-time great creators. It’s got love, Wolverine, Japan, a bunch of ninja stuff, and early Frank Miller artwork. Plus, at only $3, this is absolute steal of the week. There have been a lot (a lot) of Wolverine solo comics over the years, but for me, these are still the ones you really want, the blueprint for most of those that would come later.
Price:
$2.99
