Why It’s Cool: Look, I really don’t want to reveal my age here, but I will say that when I was a young comics readers, this was one of my favorite stories, a superhero crossover that helped push me into enjoying the medium for life. It’s a cool concept played out by fantastic creators, and I think I might use this sale as an occasion to revisit it for the first time in many many years.

Blacksad
Writer:
Juan Diaz Canales
Artist: Juanjo Guarnido
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Private investigator John Blacksad is up to his feline ears in mystery, digging into the backstories behind murders, child abductions, and nuclear secrets. Guarnido's sumptuously painted pages and rich cinematic style bring the world of 1950s America to vibrant life, with Canales weaving in fascinating tales of conspiracy, racial tension, and the "red scare" Communist witch hunts of the time. Guarnido reinvents anthropomorphism in these pages, and industry colleagues no less than Will Eisner, Jim Steranko, and Tim Sale are fans! Whether John Blacksad is falling for dangerous women or getting beaten to within an inch of his life, his stories are, simply put, unforgettable. This internationally acclaimed series has won nearly a dozen prestigious awards - including the Angoulême Comics Festival prizes for Best Series and Best Artwork-and is a three-time Eisner Award nominee.
Why It’s Cool: I’ve never read Blacksad, but Comics Bookcase Senior Staff Writer d. emerson eddy wrote a fantastic Classic Comic of the Week piece about the book recently, and it convinced me to check it out myself, as well as to suggest you take this sale as a chance to do the same.

Lady Killer Library Edition
Writer/Artist:
Joelle Jones
Colorist: Laura Allred
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Josie Schuller is a picture-perfect homemaker, wife, and mother—but she's also a ruthless killer! She balances cheerful domestic bliss with coldly efficient assassinations. From the World's Fair in Seattle to the beaches of Florida, Josie tries to keep her perfect family alive in a bloodstained new vision of the American Dream. This oversized edition collects the original series cowritten by Jones's longtime collaborator Jamie S. Rich, as well as the followup, which she both wrote and drew solo. Also included are the sketchbooks from both series and previously unpublished art. The ultimate collector's edition of the complete Lady Killer!
Why It’s Cool: Lady Killer is an excellent and relentlessly stylish comic. It essentially takes a main character who outwardly seems like a cliched homemaker — and turns her into a ruthless killer, fighting to keep her family alive in a story that is filled with unexpected twists and turns. It’s all rendered with Joelle Jones impeccable and clean art style, and this week you can get the comprehensive library edition of the book online at a fantastic price point.

$10.99

Silver Surfer: Black
Writer:
Donny Cates
Artist: Tradd Moore
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Is this the end of Norrin Radd? In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, the cosmos’ greatest defenders were thrown through a black hole — including the Silver Surfer! But his story doesn’t end there! To beat back oblivion and avoid losing himself to the darkness, the Sentinel of the Spaceways must call on all his inner light to save his own soul! With his Power Cosmic fading and the all-consuming darkness descending, will help come in the form of an unexpected ally? When the Surfer discovers something with the potential power to turn the tide, is he prepared to pay the terrible price for awakening it? And how does the Surfer’s predicament tie in to the sinister world of symbiotes? Donny Cates and Tradd Moore take the Surfer on a journey that will change him forever!
Why It’s Cool: The visionary artwork is entirely what’s for sale here. Tradd Moore is a massive talent, and he turns his experimental psychedelic aesthetic on one of my favorite Marvel Comics characters, the Silver Surfer. It all adds up to a great book, one that is an absolute joy to look at and flip through from the start to the surprising finish.
Price: $2.54

The Vision, Vol. 1 - Vol. 2
Writer:
Tom King
Artist: Gabriel Hernandez Walta
Colorist: Jordie Bellaire
Publisher: Marvel Comics
The Vision wants to be human, and what's more human than family? So he heads back to the beginning, to the laboratory where Ultron created him and molded him into a weapon. The place where he first rebelled against his given destiny, and imagined he could be more — that he could be a man. There, he builds them. A wife, Virginia. Two teenage twins, Viv and Vin. They look like him. They have his powers. They share his grandest ambition (or is that obsession?): the unrelenting need to be ordinary. Behold the Visions! They're the family next door, and they have the power to kill us all. What could possibly go wrong? Artificial hearts will be broken, bodies will not stay buried, the truth will not remain hidden, and the Vision will never be the same.
Why It’s Cool: The Vision is one of my favorite superhero comics of the past decade, turning as it does a cliched superhero concept into a suburban family drama about the other, duty, seeking normalcy, and what happens when the best of intentions turn into sheer horror. If you somehow haven’t read this book as of yet, now is your chance.
Price: $3.39 each or $6.78 total
