Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of December 18, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — Look, I’m going to be honest here: I’ve spent most of the month hoping the Grant Morrison-Dan Mora collaboration Klaus would go on sale, and now it looks like it hasn’t. Anyway, little miffed there, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have a great list of the best comiXology sales for the weekend of December 18, 2020 all the same! Including a Batman Christmas comic, kind of.

Enjoy!

Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of December 18, 2020

Batman: Noel
Writer/Artist:
Lee Bermejo
Publisher: DC Comics
#1 NEW YORK TIMES Bestseller
Inspired by Charles Dickens' immortal classic A Christmas Carol, BATMAN: NOEL features different interpretations of The Dark Knight, along with his enemies and allies, in different eras.
Along the way, Batman must come to terms with his past, present and future as he battles villains from the campy 1960s to dark and brooding menaces of today, while exploring what it means to be the hero that he is. Members of Batman's supporting cast enact roles analogous to those from A Christmas Carol, with Robin, Catwoman, Superman, The Joker and more playing roles that will be familiar to anyone who knows Dickens' original holiday tale.
Why It’s Cool: This one feels kind of self evident. Here we sit, seven days away from the Christmas holiday as I type this, and DC Comics has put on sale Batman: Noel…which is a Batman comic inspired by A Christmas Carol. It’s an interesting artifact given that premise alone, but add in that the book is written and illustrated by the towering talent that is Lee Bermejo? This is very much worth a seasonal read this week.

Jane is sick of her dead-end life in the suburbs, and desperate for a change. Her old friend Natalie made it out, living in Japan as a fashion model. Now, as Natalie comes back to town on business, Jane sees a way for her friend to do her a favor… whether she likes it or not.
Why It’s Cool: We recently reviewed Gooch’s new book with IDW, Under-Earth, and it was one of our reviewer’s favorites of 2020. As fate would have it, one of Gooch’s most recent books just so happens to be one sale this week as well. So, if you read that review, tried the book, and want even more work from the cartoonist, here’s your chance. This is an understated yet powerful book that speaks to shared histories and friendships. It’s a great read, as is all of Gooch’s fantastic work.

From Hell
Writer:
Alan Moore
Artist: Eddie Campbell
Publisher: IDW Publishing - Top Shelf
NOTE: This comic is for adult viewers only, due to sexual content and nudity.
From Hell features the story of Jack the Ripper, the most infamous serial murderer of all time. Alan Moore names Dr. Gull as the villain and creates the most compelling and terrifying psychological study ever undertaken. All the conspiracies and cover-ups are considered and bound together in this vortex of terror. A gripping crime noir masterpiece of historical fiction.
Why It’s Cool: While other Moore works tend to get more attention (thinking specifically here of Watchmen), there’s a strong case to be made for From Hell being the writer’s masterpiece, teaming as he does with the powerful talent behind Alec, Eddie Campbell, an all-time great cartoonist. I’d also be remiss here if I didn’t point any who are interested toward our Comics Anatomy: From Hell feature, which does a spectacular job breaking down some of the visual influences.
Price: $4.49 for the original version, or $13.49 for the master edition

Ghost Tree
Writer:
Bobby Curnow
Artist: Simon Gane
Publisher: IDW Publishing
A touching graphic novel about love, loss, and how the past never truly stays dead. Seeking a refuge from an unhappy life, Brandt returns to his ancestral home in Japan to find a haunted tree and the departed souls that are drawn to it, including his grandfather. Getting more involved with the tree’s inhabitants, he attempts to heal some of history’s wounds but will he be able to find a measure of peace for himself when someone special from his past returns?
Why It’s Cool: This Eisner-nominated miniseries was a fantastic and poetic meditation on love, loss, and time, played out through supernatural touches and a trip to Japan. I loved every issue of this as it was coming out, flying as it did quite a bit below the radar. If you missed this book, now is a fantastic time to get caught up on a really strong comic.

March Book One - March Book Three
Writers:
Andrew Aydin and John Lewis
Artist: Nate Powell
Publisher: IDW Publishing - Top Shelf Digital
Before he became a respected Congressman, John Lewis was clubbed, gassed, arrested over 40 times, and nearly killed by angry mobs and state police, all while nonviolently protesting racial discrimination. He marched side-by-side with Martin Luther King as the youngest leader of the Civil Rights Movement that would change a nation forever.
Now, experience John Lewis' incredible story first-hand, brought to life in a stunning graphic novel trilogy. With co-writer Andrew Aydin and Eisner Award-winning artist Nate Powell, John Lewis' MARCH tells the story of how a poor sharecropper's son helped transform America, from a segregated schoolhouse to the 1963 March on Washington and beyond.
BOOK ONE spans John Lewis' youth in rural Alabama, his life-changing meeting with Dr. King, the birth of the Nashville Student Movement, and their battle to tear down segregation through nonviolent sit-ins, building to a stunning climax on the steps of City Hall.
Why It’s Cool: Ranking as one of (if not the) greatest autobiographical comics ever made, this set of three graphic novels has been a must-read since it first came out. With Rep. John Lewis passing this year — a year marked by protests for racial justice — the experience of reading these books for the first time is all the more poignant.
Price: $13.92 for all three
