Old Guard, Vol. 1

Why It’s Cool: The Old Guard just got a new television adaptation via Netflix, starring Charlize Theron. That’s certainly nothing to scoff at, and I’m sure people will be talking about it at least a little bit, although I haven’t seen the movie yet myself. What I have done is read these comics back when they first came out, and I can tell you, this series is well worth your time to check out. It’s an interested concept — a group of soldiers is nigh-immortal — and trying to avoid capture and scrutiny, and it’s done here with writer Greg Rucka’s signature deep attention to realistic detail and choices.

Avengers: Four

Why It’s Cool: It didn’t seem like too many readers noticed this brief Avengers series a few years back by Mark Waid and Barry Kitson, and maybe that was because they did a weird #1.1, #1.2, #1.3, etc. numbering thing with it, but I thought it was really well done. It was Waid/Kitson’s modern take on a classic Avengers story, set in the time after the original team had disbanded and been replaced by the ragtag group of Cap, Hawkeye, and two villains - Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch. It was a fun period piece character study (complete with a fake letters page made to look like one from the Stan/Jack Marvel heyday), and it led directly in to Avengers: No Surrender, which set the stage for the genius that is Immortal Hulk.

Justice League: No Justice

Why It’s Cool: I’ve seen some folks online wondering what all they have to read in order for DC Comics current summer mega-event, Dark Nights: Death Metal, to make sense. Obviously, the main answer there is the first event, Dark Nights: Metal, but the next stepping stone to the present after that is this story, Justice League: No Justice, which takes place in the immediate aftermath of Metal and kicks into motion the events that would give rise to Snyder’s run on Justice League, which is essentially the stairway to the second event. It’s a decent read on its own (more or less), but it’s vital if you’re trying to catch up on stuff that gives more context to Death Metal.

Why It’s Cool: I’ve been thinking a lot about Grant Morrison’s run on JLA lately, mostly because I’ve been thinking a lot about Grant Morrison, having read for the first time this year his runs on Animal Man and Doom Patrol. This JLA run was the one that made him a commercial force, and it was also my own first exposure to his work, way back when as a young reader riding my bike to my local comic book store to first immerse myself in this hobby. I’m starting to think a re-read of these books may be in order, and so I’m glad now that they’re all on sale, making it pretty easy to procure in its entirety.

Hawkeye by Jeff Lemire

Why It’s Cool: Writer Jeff Lemire and artist Ramon Perez had MASSIVE shoes to fill when they did the first major run on Hawkeye after Matt Fraction and David Aja’s work with Hawkeye redefined not only the character but the entire tone of Marvel’s superhero comics (in tandem with the Waid/Samnee run of Daredevil). And you know what? The Hawkeye comics that Lemire and Perez made were pretty good. Certainly not the redefining work that their predecessors did, but a nice story heavily rooted in character.
