Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of July 10

PICK OF THE WEEK
Old Guard, Vol. 1
Writer:
Greg Rucka
Artist: Leandro Fernandez
Publisher: Image Comics
Collecting the critically acclaimed miniseries by GREG RUCKA and LEANDRO FERNANDEZ. Old soldiers never die…and some of them don’t even fade away. Cursed with immortality, Andromache of Scythia and her comrades-in-arms ply their trade for those who can find—and afford—their services. But in the 21st century, being immortal is a difficult secret to keep, and when you live long enough, you learn that there are many fates far worse than death. Collects THE OLD GUARD #1-5.
Why It’s Cool: The Old Guard just got a new television adaptation via Netflix, starring Charlize Theron. That’s certainly nothing to scoff at, and I’m sure people will be talking about it at least a little bit, although I haven’t seen the movie yet myself. What I have done is read these comics back when they first came out, and I can tell you, this series is well worth your time to check out. It’s an interested concept — a group of soldiers is nigh-immortal — and trying to avoid capture and scrutiny, and it’s done here with writer Greg Rucka’s signature deep attention to realistic detail and choices.

Avengers: Four
Writer:
Mark Waid
Artist: Barry Kitson
Publisher: Marvel Comics
The Old Order Changeth — more than you ever suspected! For the first time ever, learn what really happened all those years ago when the founding Avengers turned over their membership to a set of new recruits. Three reformed super villains — Hawkeye, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch — join the recently thawed Captain America as a new group of Earth's Mightiest Heroes takes shape! But with his team labeled "The Mighty Pretenders" by an unforgiving public, how can Steve Rogers revive the Avengers' reputation when they face an unbeatable foe? Perhaps he has an ace up his sleeve — one you've never seen before! It's a new story of Cap's Kooky Quartet (should that be Quintet?) that has direct ramifications for the Avengers of today!
Why It’s Cool: It didn’t seem like too many readers noticed this brief Avengers series a few years back by Mark Waid and Barry Kitson, and maybe that was because they did a weird #1.1, #1.2, #1.3, etc. numbering thing with it, but I thought it was really well done. It was Waid/Kitson’s modern take on a classic Avengers story, set in the time after the original team had disbanded and been replaced by the ragtag group of Cap, Hawkeye, and two villains - Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch. It was a fun period piece character study (complete with a fake letters page made to look like one from the Stan/Jack Marvel heyday), and it led directly in to Avengers: No Surrender, which set the stage for the genius that is Immortal Hulk.

Justice League: No Justice
Writer:
Scott Snyder
Artist: Francis Manapul
Publisher: DC Comics
The creative team of Scott Snyder, Joshua Williamson, James Tynion IV and Francis Manapul unleash new super-teams in Justice League: No Justice. The events of Dark Nights: Metal have transformed the universe in ways both wonderful and terrifying...and unleashed four ancient entities with the power to destroy it all. Mystery. Wonder. Wisdom. Entropy. These four forces govern all of existence, and now the godlike beings who embody them have awakened. All life is in jeopardy, and the only chance the superheroes of Earth have to stop the unthinkable lies in new alliances...the likes of which have never been seen before! Superman, Starfire and Martian Manhunter search for the secrets of the cosmos in Team Mystery! Batman, Beast Boy and Deathstroke battle chaos itself as Team Entropy! Wonder Woman, Zatanna and Etrigan the Demon unlock bizarre alien technologies with Team Wonder! And the Flash, Cyborg and Harley Quinn learn the astonishing truths of Team Wisdom! Can these amazing new Justice Leagues stick together to stop universal annihilation? Some heroes will not live long enough to find out...
Why It’s Cool: I’ve seen some folks online wondering what all they have to read in order for DC Comics current summer mega-event, Dark Nights: Death Metal, to make sense. Obviously, the main answer there is the first event, Dark Nights: Metal, but the next stepping stone to the present after that is this story, Justice League: No Justice, which takes place in the immediate aftermath of Metal and kicks into motion the events that would give rise to Snyder’s run on Justice League, which is essentially the stairway to the second event. It’s a decent read on its own (more or less), but it’s vital if you’re trying to catch up on stuff that gives more context to Death Metal.

JLA by Grant Morrison
Writer:
Grant Morrison
Main Artist: Howard Porter
Publisher: DC Comics
Relive the legendary 1990s JLA series, written by comics mastermind Grant Morrison (FINAL CRISIS) with stunning art by Howard Porter and others, in this amazing oversized softcover collecting JLA #1-9 and SECRET FILES AND ORIGINS #1! The action begins as the JLA reunites to stop the Hyperclan, who have come to Earth posing as a new group of super heroes. But as their true nature comes to light, only the World's Greatest Super Heroes can stop them! Standing side by side, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, Green Lantern and the Martian Manhunter take on alien posers and come to realize that Earth needs a protectorate made up of only the mightiest icons!
Why It’s Cool: I’ve been thinking a lot about Grant Morrison’s run on JLA lately, mostly because I’ve been thinking a lot about Grant Morrison, having read for the first time this year his runs on Animal Man and Doom Patrol. This JLA run was the one that made him a commercial force, and it was also my own first exposure to his work, way back when as a young reader riding my bike to my local comic book store to first immerse myself in this hobby. I’m starting to think a re-read of these books may be in order, and so I’m glad now that they’re all on sale, making it pretty easy to procure in its entirety.
Price: $5.94 each; or $23.76 for all four volumes

Hawkeye by Jeff Lemire
Writer:
Jeff Lemire
Artist: Ramon Perez
Publisher: Marvel Comics
It's a fresh look into the life of everyone's favorite Avenger! With Kate Bishop back at his side, Team Hawkeye is thrown into a new adventure spanning two generations of avenging archers! Past and present lives collide as Kate and Clint face a threat that will challenge everything they know about what it means to be Hawkeye. The past and present merge as Hawkeyes Barton and Bishop race against time to save a group of innocent kids with devastating powers. What makes a hero? And what breaks a hero? Hawkeye and Hawkeye will experience both. A boy at odds with his big brother. A hero out of sync with his partner. Team Hawkeye is fractured. Things come to a head as Barney, Clint and Kate learn what it means to carry the name Hawkeye.
Why It’s Cool: Writer Jeff Lemire and artist Ramon Perez had MASSIVE shoes to fill when they did the first major run on Hawkeye after Matt Fraction and David Aja’s work with Hawkeye redefined not only the character but the entire tone of Marvel’s superhero comics (in tandem with the Waid/Samnee run of Daredevil). And you know what? The Hawkeye comics that Lemire and Perez made were pretty good. Certainly not the redefining work that their predecessors did, but a nice story heavily rooted in character.
Price: $2.54 and $3.39; or $5.93 total
Buy It Here: Hawkeye Vol. 5; and Hawkeye Vol. 6
