Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of July 17

By Zack Quaintance — One thing I found a bit odd during the pandemic was that Image Comics wasn’t actively running any sales on digital comics. This perplexed me, because there has never been a better time to sell digital comics than during that stretch of weeks when physical comic shops were mostly closed. That, however, has now changed! And we’re back in business with an excellent Image sale. In fact, four of this week’s five Best comiXology Sales are Image comics.

Enjoy!

Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of July 17

PICK OF THE WEEK
Sandman, Vol. 1 - Vol. 11
Writer:
Neil Gaiman
Artists: Various
Publisher: DC Comics - Vertigo
New York Times best-selling author Neil Gaiman's transcendent series THE SANDMAN is often hailed as the definitive Vertigo title and one of the finest achievements in graphic storytelling. Gaiman created an unforgettable tale of the forces that exist beyond life and death by weaving ancient mythology, folklore and fairy tales with his own distinct narrative vision.
Why It’s Cool: The lone entry on this week’s list that is not from Image Comics, up first we have one of the single greatest achievements in the history of monthly comics — Sandman, by Neil Gaiman and a host of talent artists. This is perhaps the proto Vertigo book, the comic that an entire generation points to when they talk about having their perception of comics expanded past simply superheroes. This probably seems odd to a newer generation that has a host of non-superhero comics content readily available, but for many of us, Sandman was that book, a highly literary massive achievement that spans 75 incredible issues. This is, simply put, a must-read comic, foundational to what has so far been achieved with the medium.
Price:
$5.09 each, or $55.99 for all of it.

100%
Writer/Artist:
Paul Pope
Publisher: Image Comics
Set in HEAVY LIQUID's alternate future New York and the same timeline as hit series Batman Year 100, 100% focuses on the intertwining struggles, hopes, and loves of six characters all working and frequenting the seedy Catshack strip club. Blending the worlds of sex work, MMA fighting, and urban menace, 100% asks—is it possible to find love, safety, and hope in this dystopian American megalopolis?
Why It’s Cool: I recently read and reviewed this remastered graphic novel by writer/artist Paul Pope, a prescient early 2000s tour de force of humanity-meets-technology storytelling from a very talented creator. This book 100 percent (sorry!) deserves re-evaluation now in the context of 2020, so relevant are the things it does with tech and oppression.

Assassin Nation
Writer:
Kyle Starks
Artist: Erica Henderson
Publisher: Image Comics
Hot off her breakout success at Marvel, two-time Eisner award winner ERICA HENDERSON (The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Jughead) teams up with KYLE STARKS (SEXCASTLE, Rick and Morty) for a hilarious twist on the hitman trope. The former World’s Greatest Hitman hires the 20 best assassins in the world to be his bodyguards. These mean-as-hell hired guns and murderers must work together to keep the new crime boss safe while attempting to solve the mystery of who’s trying to off him.
Why It’s Cool: Kyle Starks as writer and Erica Henderson as artist is just such a funny, winning combination of creators, and what results from the team-up is one of the most joyous comic book stories in a long while — even if it is entirely about assassin’s killing each other. I’ve said this before and I’ll say this again, but the most relevant tidbit about this book is that it features a character named F#*@ Tarkington. That’s the kind of irreverent and excellent sense of humor you get with this must-read comic.

Blue Monday, Vol. 1 - Vol. 3
Writer/Artist:
Chyna Clugston Flores
Publisher:
Image Comics
Teenage warfare between the hormone-crazed girls and boys of Jefferson High erupts! The gang throws a fancy dinner party, but after the boys attempt to videotape Bleu taking a bath, the whole ordeal ends in a social status disaster. To restore her reputation, Bleu agrees to go on a date with Alan in exchange for the evidence. For the first time ever, the entire library of BLUE MONDAY will appear in full-color by superstar colorist JORDIE BELLAIRE!
Why It’s Cool: I have to be honest about Blue Monday — until Kieron Gillen recommended it on our recent Quarantine Reading List, I was not even a little bit aware of this early 2000s series. Since then, however, I have caught up with the series, and boy am I glad I did. This is a foundational comic for the past 20 years of teen-centric comic stories, taking a realistic and unflinching approach to what it’s like to be young person, riven by hormones and fueled by music as you meddle through your first adult mistakes. It’s a must-read, and I absolutely love it. It’s especially recommended for fans of Wic + Div, Scott Pilgrim, etc.
Price: $3.59 for Vol. 1; $5.39 for Vol. 2 & Vol. 3; or $14.37 for all of it.

Lazarus, Collection 1 - Collection 3
Writer:
Greg Rucka
Artist: Michael Lark
Publisher: Image Comics
This prestige edition collects the first two arcs of the critically acclaimed and New York Times bestselling series; "Family," which introduces Forever Carlyle and her Family as they are brought to the brink of war in a future of economic collapse; and "Lift," where Forever uncovers a terrorist plot against her Family while another family altogether, the Barrets, take desperate measures to escape their life of poverty. PLUS! Never-before-seen work by MICHAEL LARK and graphic designer ERIC TRAUTMANN, and exclusive world-building content.
Why It’s Cool: Lazarus is one of my personal favorite books in all of comics, right up there with the likes of Saga and Monstress. In fact, I think Saga, Monstress, and Lazarus are my big three of original ongoing monthly comics. What I really like about Lazarus, is that it’s got plenty of outlandish sci-fi ideas. The main character, for example, is an immortal genetically-engineered killing machine who wastes everyone in her path with a katana. Yet, this book feels real. It feels like an engaging political discussion of where our modern society is headed, and I can’t get enough of its mix of action and contemplation. All three omnibuses are on sale now, and if you’re not familiar with this book…now is the time.
Price:
$12.59 for the first collection; $14.39 for collections two and three; or $41.37 for all of it.
