SMALL PRESS PREVIEW: Thompson Heller - Detective Interstellar

By Zack Quaintance — Here at Comics Bookcase, we are unabashed super fans of artist Dave Chisholm. We really enjoyed his monthly series from Scout Comics, Canopus, and we were blown away by his forthcoming graphic novel, Chasin’ The Bird: Charlie Parker in California. Now, Chisholm has another monthly book due out this fall, and it just might be the punctuation mark on one of the best years for any creator in comics.

The new book is called Thompson Heller: Detective Interstellar, and it features art by Chisholm, scripts by Milton Lawson, and colors by Fabian Cobos. Published by Source Point Press, the first issue is due out Oct. 28, 2020. And we can’t wait. We’re also honored this morning to have a five-page preview of the first issue, which is available to order through Previews now. The best way I think to describe this story is a space noir, as it features a detective traveling to another planet where a friend has been filmed committing an atrocious crime…that is maybe not quite what it seems.

Thompson Heller, a private detective who travels the stars solving cases that have political or moral intrigue, travels to a faraway planet to help an old friend accused of murder. Heller doesn't believe his friend is guilty, but video surveillance seems to prove otherwise. While on the case, Heller sees friction in his romantic life. He's falling in love with his recurring intellectual sparring partner, a prominent religious academic. The complication arises from the fact that he's the most prominent atheist in the galaxy. Another impossible case for the man whose friends call him "Hell."
