By Zack Quaintance — There’s a reason that famous comedian/actor Patton Oswalt keeps Tweeting about Going to the Chapel. As I’ve written in past reviews, this is a well-done book that delves fearlessly into the absurd, exploring madcap relationship drama and doling out one-liners left and right. It’s also very very funny through out. And so it makes sense that Oswalt (who knows from funny) would be as into the book as I am. 

This third issue continues both the laughs and momentum, opening with a flashback that fills us in on what’s happening with some of the principal characters and why, making the stakes in the present even more dramatic. One thing that continues to really impress me about Going to the Chapel is how it manages to be contained to a series of events that are basically taking place over the course of an afternoon, yet it simultaneously feels incredibly fast-paced. It’s a credit to the creators that they can make a bottled concept move so quickly.

One way they’ve been accomplishing this is with the use of breakneck and fearless plot twists, which have been expertly seeded since the comic’s start. I won’t go into detail (we’re spoiler adverse here), but we get more of that in this comic. I also continue to be impressed by the art team of Gavin Guidry and colorist Liz Kramer, who combine for a clean style that perfectly illustrates writer David Pepose’s’ script, be it throughout the course of an action sequence or within intimate developments and reveals between our characters. It’s great stuff, and it’s coming together seamlessly.

Another strength of this book is how effective the supporting cast is, leveraged expertly by Pepose et. al to both give us reveals about what’s happening outside the titular chapel, as well as the moments of comic relief and levity that so effectively drive the book. Basically, if you’re not at least smirking at the shot-gun toting granny on a respirator, I don’t know what to tell you. 

Really, this is a fantastic penultimate issue, one that delves deeper into this series hilarious strengths while setting the stage for the upcoming finale. I, for one, stand with Patton Oswalt in really really digging this comic.

Overall: There’s a reason comedian Patton Oswalt keeps Tweeting about this comic — it’s hilarious and more folks really ought to be reading it. 9.0/10
