REVIEW: Miles to Go #1...'masterful, clean, and attention-grabbing'
By T.W. Worn — There is something about Miles To Go #1 that grips you by the collar of your shirt and pulls you along its narrative, regardless of how disturbed and unsure you may be. From the first handful of panels, you know you are being dragged across the shattered glass that is the life of Amara Bishop, the main character of the story. From the images of her childhood, shown to use as a recurring dream, to the life of a newly single mother currently going through the difficulties of a divorce, Miles To Go is a slow but enjoyable start to what will hopefully be a series I plan to stick with.
Right off the bat, B. Clay Moore (Savage, Screaming Black Thunder) builds a narrative with deliciously curious breadcrumbs. In a single issue, you learn enough of what you need to know about our protagonist, but there is still enough room to make us question if she is someone we should be rooting for. On top of this, every player in the story has a wonderful depth of character, and their interactions with each other have intent and purpose that move the narrative.
The art and coloring of Stephen Molnar (Imaginary Fiends) is clean, crisp, and full of personality. The fluidity of the images push the narrative forward just as smoothly as Moore's writing, and when all of this is paired with Thomas Maurer's lettering, you get one of the smoothest experiences we've had in comics this year. Each page has so much flavor, it would be a mistake to shove this comic down your eye-gullet without savoring every corner of the page.
Overall: Masterful, clean, and attention grabbing. Miles To Go #1 seems like the perfect thriller to usher in the Fall, and I encourage any fan of Crime (with that big ol’ C) stories to pick this series up before it takes off. 9.0/10
