REVIEW: JUNIPER #1...what are you doing with your life?

By Anna Bailey — “Juniper, what are you doing with your life?”

The age old question for everyone, isn’t it? For Juniper and her loyal robot companion, Toby, the question can’t easily be answered.

In Scout Comics’ new sci-fi/fantasy series, Juniper, Juniper and Toby are adventurers but what does that mean to them–fun, stealing, playing dress up, getting into too much trouble? They’re on the path of fun that almost crosses into dangerous when they run in Stanley–a talking, walking split leaf philodendron.

When Stanley finds out he’s been asleep for 45 years, he’s worried about his friend, Clarence, who left the day he fell asleep and hasn’t been back since. He asks the two adventurers to find her for him and in exchange, he’ll give them the house and he’ll be in their service forever. A quest Juniper and Toby jump at almost willingly.

The first issue does a great job at setting up the rest of the story. In this 28-page story, we learn so much. Like how Toby is the funny and carefree sidekick who is getting the two into more trouble than they can often handle, and Juniper is the level-headed and generous leader who can be talking into almost anything if it means saving someone or something.

We’re introduced to the two as they’re running away from mechanical bees, Juniper swearing up and down that the bees and their Queen have the wrong duo. That herself and Toby definitely did not steal any honey. When the two slip out of the bees’ path, Toby definitely did steal the honey– “It’s robot honey. You know how rare this stuff is!”

Then Stanley appears, almost as if he’s coming straight out of Little Shop of Horrors. He means to scare away goblins, but instead freezes Toby and Juniper in fear on sight. The rest is history between the three of them.

Juniper #1 is a comic debut for both Nathan Tomsic and Georgiana Brown, while artist Lorenzo Colangeli worked on Becstar in 2021. The talent these three have is obvious on the pages. The chemistry between characters, the ability to tell a lot about them in a short amount of time, and the beautiful colors all contribute to why I’m excited for the story to continue.

Juniper #1 is fun for all ages, whether you’re a fan of fantasy, fun, or just fiction.

Overall: Juniper #1 tells the story of the the last human on Earth, but doesn’t feel like it’s the end of the world; it’s fun for all ages, whether you’re a fan of fantasy, fun, or just fiction. 8/10
