Top Comics to Buy for May 27, 2020: The Chaos
By Zack Quaintance — To be totally blunt, it’s a chaotic time to be tracking and recommending new release comics. Some of the product coming out to stores (those that are open and functioning, that is) are books that were stalled in Diamond’s warehouse. Others are new releases, and still more have been regulated to digital-only releases. That said, we did our best to come up with a set of Top Comics to Buy for May 27, 2020, for those of who are able to shop for comics right now in these times.
Enjoy!

*PICK OF THE WEEK*
Marauders #10
Writer: Gerry Duggan
Artist: Stefano Caselli
Colorist: Edgar Delgado
Letterer: VC’s Cory Petit
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Designer: Tom Muller
Price: $3.99
A SHOW OF POWER! The Marauders set their sights on the power-dampening technology that seems to have made its way into far too many hands – most notably, the Russian Army. The Hellfire’s wrath with be swift and harsh.
Why It’s Cool: Marvel’s line of X-Men comics is the hottest superhero property in the industry right now, and — arguably — the set of books that have been most keenly missed during the distribution stoppage. These X-Men comics had real momentum going into the break, and now they’re coming back, starting with this week’s Marauders #10. Marauders has been a fun romp of a mutant-high seas comic with undertones of global-economic intrigue, but, more than anything, we’re just happy there are new X-Men comics coming out again.

Alienated #3
Writer: Simon Spurrier
Artist: Chris Wildgoose
Colorist: André May
Letterer: Jim Campbell
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Price: $3.99
It's Samantha's turn with Chip-the dangerous alien-but everything starts to go wrong when she instigates a confrontation with her ex-boyfriend. Scared and angry, Samantha struggles with the decision to use Chip's powers for her own benefit. But not even she knows what the true consequences will be...
Why It’s Cool: We’ve been enjoying Alienated quite a bit since the first issue surprised us, and this week brings the return of one of the most fully-formed original new series to come to monthly comics in a long while. The outward plot has a lot to do with aliens, but the emotional core of this book is all about gaining a better and more empathetic understanding of the other people who occupy your world. Is there a more timely message for the pandemic-struck planet in 2020? I don’t think so.

Bog Bodies OGN
Writer: Declan Shalvey
Artist: Gavin Fullerton
Colorist: Rebecca Nalty
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: Image Comics
Price: $12.99
An Irish gangster on the run after a job gone wrong stumbles upon a young woman lost in the Dublin mountains. Injured and unarmed, the unlikely pair must try to evade their pursuers and survive the desolate bog that has served as a burial ground for unspeakable murder throughout history.
Why It’s Cool: You can read our full review of Bog Bodies here, but to sum it up, this original graphic novel is the best thing that writer/artist Declan Shalvey has written yet. It’s executed here by a fantastic cartoonist in Gavin Fullerton. The end result is a book that feels satisfying, as well as unique when taken within the larger context of modern crime comics. This is a great read start to finish, and a wonderful story to get lost in for an afternoon during these crazy quarantined times.

Butcher of Paris #5
Writer: Stephanie Phillips
Artist: Dean Kotz
Colorist: Jason Wordie
Letterer: Troy Peteri
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Price: $3.99
Behind bars, Petiot proclaims himself a resistance fighter and patriot. As the trial begins, a new spectacle presents itself. With the magnitude of the murders coming to light, what possible justice can be served?
Why It’s Cool: We’ve loved Butcher of Paris. Historical fiction is an under-explored genre within comics, but when it’s done well, it can be a great fit with the medium. This book not only tackles historical fiction, but it also incorporates another type of story that monthly periodical storytelling handles well — an intriguing murder mystery. This is actual the series’ finale, and so you’re probably not picking it up unless you’ve followed the series to date. If you have, however, this is a must-read comic.

King of Nowhere #2
Writer: W. Maxwell Prince
Artist: Tyler Jenkins
Colorist: Hilary Jenkins
Letterer: Andworld Design
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Price: $3.99
Now an honorary citizen of Nowhere, Denis joins one of the locals on a doomed-to-fail money-making scheme at the outskirts of town, while John Doe’s mysterious killer continues to leave bodies in his wake…
Why It’s Cool: Writer W. Maxwell Prince is one of our favorite creators in comics, as he’s currently penning our favorite monthly series, Ice Cream Man. He’s joined on this book by another excellent creator, Tyler Jenkins, whose ethereal and loose illustrative style fits Prince’s reality-skewing ideas for this new title perfectly. We were intrigued by the first issue, and we’re very much looking forward to seeing what else this series is interested in and where it wants to take the odd ideas established in the series premiere.
