Top Comics to Buy for January 6, 2021

PICK OF THE WEEK
Wrong Earth: Night and Day #1
Writer:
Tom Peyer
Artist: Jamal Igle
Inker: Juan Castro
Colorist: Andy Troy
Letterer: Rob Steen
Publisher: AHOY Comics
Price: $3.99
The vengeance-dealing Dragonfly sticks it to the man! The acrobatic sleuth Dragonflyman assists the police! These alternate-earth versions of the same masked crimefighter meet face-to-face for the first time in this new series by the original creators of the smash-hit The Wrong Earth! Will their impossible encounter result in a team-up... or an all-out war? Every AHOY title also features extra bonus prose stories, beautifully illustrated.
Why It’s Cool: Wrong Earth has been the quintessential AHOY Comics book — a clever and fearless satire of some of the comics industry’s long-time sacred cows. Now, the book is back with what it essentially its third volume of issues, and it remains as sharp as it has been from its start.

Dark Nights: Death Metal #7
Writer:
Scott Snyder
Artist: Greg Capullo, with Yanick Paquette and Bryan Hitch
Inker: Jonathan Glapion
Colorist: FCO Plascencia, with Nathan Fairbairn and Alex Sinclair
Letterer: Tom Napolitano
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $5.99
The song remains anything but the same as the house lights start to come up on DC’s biggest, baddest battle for control of the Multiverse! The Darkest Knight is on the verge of ending this concert once and for all, but Wonder Woman has more than just a greatest hit planned. The Amazonian warrior stands ready to shred the Darkest Knight, solo! Plus, this extra-sized finale issue includes not one but two mind-blowing epilogues that lead directly into the next phase of the DC Universe-and no fan will want to miss that!
Why It’s Cool: For months before this event (and even further back), the rub on Dark Nights: Death Metal has been that the ending will essentially contextualize what is to come next for DC Comics line of superhero stories. While this promised ending made it difficult to enjoy the journey at times, this issue finally delivers the full payoff, and it’s been a long-time coming indeed. For those interested in what comes next, this is a must-read. Plus, that cover is absolutely phenomenal.

Eternals #1
Writer:
Kieron Gillen
Artist: Esad Ribic
Colorist: Matthew Wilson
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $4.99
NEVER DIE. NEVER WIN. ETERNALS. What's the point of an eternal battle? For millions of years, one hundred Eternals have roamed the Earth, secret protectors of humanity. Without them, we'd be smears between the teeth of the demon-like Deviants. Their war has waged for all time, echoing in our myths and nightmares. But today, Eternals face something new: change. Can they – or anyone on Earth – survive their discovery? From the thought provoking minds of Kieron Gillen (The Wicked + The Divine, Uncanny X-Men, Thor) and Esad Ribić (Secret Wars, King Thor) comes a new vision of the classic Marvel mythology!
Why It’s Cool: Of all of Jack Kirby’s many lasting contributions to American comics, The Eternals has always been one of the most difficult concepts to grasp. With a new giant movie on the way, however, Marvel Comics has enlisted two powerhouse creators to bring a new vision to the concept and characters, and the result is a beautiful and kinetic comic that does it’s best to make the characters both intriguing and understandable.

Future State: Swamp Thing #1
Writer:
Ram V.
Artist: Mike Perkins
Colorist: June Chung
Letterer: Aditya Bidikar
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $3.99
From the ashes of a terrible war, life blooms anew in Swamp Thing’s image. The remnants of humanity lie in hiding, forever in the shadow of the green god who now rules the planet. When the new avatar of the Green uncovers a stray human, a rebellion is revealed! But this Swamp Thing is no stranger to violent ends, and neither are his creations. If it’s war humanity wants, it will be at their doorstep-and Swamp Thing will never be the same!
Why It’s Cool: Since DC Comics’ two-month slate of experimental Future State books was first announced, this one has been on my radar, perhaps more than any of the other titles. It just has such an excellent creative team, and it’s also one that stands to stay on the character after this experimental gap period has ended. Given the success writer Ram V. has been having both at DC and with his fantastic indie work, this book is very much one to pick-up in perpetuity.

Usagi Yojimbo #16
Writer/Artist/Letterer:
Stan Sakai
Colorist: Hi-Fi
Editor: Bobby Curnow
Publisher: IDW - Publishing
Price: $3.99
A new band of Tengu mountain goblins have invaded the northern mountains, a species new to Usagi. Savage and relentless, they are determined to drive the established Tengu out and prey upon the people of the area. For the first time, Usagi must ally himself with yokai to keep the invaders out. The first chapter of a new multi-part story!
Why It’s Cool: I’m always talking about comics that are so good for so long, we as readers/critics start to take them for granted. Usagi Yojimbo is exhibit A. Just a fantastic comic every month, and one that makes its new arcs truly accessible to new readers. This comic is one such first chapter. It’s also exciting because Usagi is about to go up against a horde of were creatures. If you’ve been wondering what you’re missing with these comics, this issue is a great place to start.
