Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of November 20, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — This week there are several sales on comiXology dubbed “The Road to Black Friday.” But friends? I personally cannot find the difference between the road to Black Friday and actual Black Friday itself. There’s just so much available at discounted prices. And below — as always — I have compiled a list of my favorite books available for great deals. Enjoy!

Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of November 20, 2020

PICK OF THE WEEK
Batman Universe
Writer:
Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Nick Derington
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Letterers: Josh Reed, Carlos M. Mangual, Tom Napolitano, and Troy Peteri
Publisher: DC Comics
In this story written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by Nick Derington, Batman is pushed to his limit as he sets off in search of an item with incredible destructive powers-and embarks on a journey across the DC Universe! It's a race to the finish line as Batman chases the Riddler from Gotham to Gorilla City and beyond, with the fate of humanity in the balance. Guest stars include Vandal Savage, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Deathstroke, Jonah Hex, and more! Collects Batman: Universe #1-6.
Why It’s Cool: You can read my full review here, but this is a fantastic quintessential DC Universe comic. I also think this is the first time it’s ever been on sale digitally for this price. I have a physical hardcover on my shelf, but at this price, I might buy it digitally as well for ease of reading. It’s that good.
Price: $5.94

Annihilator #1 - #6
Writer:
Grant Morrison
Artist: Frazer Irving
Letterer: Jared K. Fletcher
Book and Logo Designer: John J. Hill
Editor: Bob Schreck
Publisher: Legendary
Legendary Comics proudly presents Annihilator, an original graphic novel odyssey from the subversive mind of Grant Morrison. This 6-issue series is a reality-bending sci-fi adventure like no other, brought to life with stunning artwork from Frazer Irving (Batman and Robin, Judge Dredd, Necronauts). Washed-up Hollywood screenwriter Ray Spass is caught in a downward spiral of broken relationships, wild parties and self-destruction. Out of luck and out of chances, he's one failed script away from fading into obscurity. Little does he know he's about to write the story of his life. As his imagination runs rampant, Ray must join forces with his own fictional character Max Nomax on a reality-bending race to stop the entire universe from imploding... without blowing his own mind in the process.
Why It’s Cool: This book has been framed to me as a lot like the Grant Morrison/Frank Quitely classic Flex Mentallo, but with less reliance on insular comics culture. I snapped it up when it was on sale in collected form last week, but if you missed that, you can buy the issues individually on sale now for less than $1 a piece, which adds up to less than the price of two brand-new comics.
Price: $.99 each or $5.94 for the entire volume

Canto, Vol. 1: If I Only Had A Heart
Writer:
David M. Booher
Artist: Drew Zucker
Colorist: Vittorio Astone
Letterer: Deron Bennett
Publisher: IDW
Canto’s adventure begins! Enslaved for generations, Canto’s people once had hearts. Now they have clocks. When slavers damage a little tin girl’s clock beyond repair, Canto must brave his strange and fantastic world to bring back her heart. Can he overcome the dangers that await to save the one he loves? An all-ages fable inspired by Wizard of Oz and Dante's Inferno. Part fantasy. Part adventure. All heart.
Why It’s Cool: And now for something totally different…Canto is an adorable classic fantasy with a slight mechanical twist that makes it all the easier to follow. It’s literally the story of an unlikely mechanical knight looking for a heart, and it felt like exactly what we all needed as it was coming out over the course of the last few years. Get the entire first volume now.

Sugar & Spike
Writer:
Keith Giffen
Artist:
Bilquis Evely
Colorist:
Ivan Plascencia
Letterers:
Tom Napolitano and Sal Cipriano
Publisher:
DC Comics
The problem with having a past is that it eventually catches up with you. Especially if you’re a superhero. And who do you call when a past indiscretion threatens to become a present-day debacle? Who do you call when yesterday’s questionable decision threatens to become today’s humiliating headline? Sugar & Spike, Private Investigations—Metahumans a Specialty! When Batman’s armory is raided by a killer foe…when a cache of Kryptonian secrets Superman would prefer to stay buried is about to be unearthed…when Wonder Woman has to face the most fearsome foe of all: her ex…when any A-list hero calls up with a case too sensitive for anyone else to handle, this odd couple of crack investigators can get the job done…for a price. Of course, there’s the question of whether they’ll kiss each other or kill each other before the job is completed—if they live that long, that is…
Why It’s Cool: Look, I’m going to be honest here — this is another book on the list this week that I haven’t read (but have personally purchased on comiXology!). The reason it’s on here is because A. I really like the work of both Keith Giffen and Bilquis Evely (like, a lot), and B. Someone on Twitter said this was the natural next book to read after the recently-concluded (and wonderfully clever/irreverent) Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen, and that series is an instant-classic.

Wonder Woman: The Hiketeia
Writer:
Greg Rucka
Artist: J.G. Jones
Inker: Wade von Grawbadger
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Letterer:
Todd Klein
Publisher:
DC Comics
Wonder Woman faces off against her Justice League companion Batman! An ancient, long-forgotten ritual bonds Diana to a young lady from Gotham City with a deeply troubled past. Worse yet, Wonder Woman is trapped into the role of her teacher and protector, and soon discovers that she also must stand between her student and the earthly justice that the Dark Knight so rightly seeks.
Why It’s Cool: A long while back, site contributor Taylor Pechter wrote an excellent piece about Wonder Woman: The Hiketeia, a book I read way back when around time of publication. This piece (which you should all go read!) made me make a mental note to revisit this story, and you know what? Now it’s on sale, so there’s never been a better time for me to go ahead and do that, probably this very weekend.

$5.09
