Best comiXology Sales: Memorial Day Weekend 2021

By Zack Quaintance — Summer is here, and we all know what that means…that’s right — it’s time to start reading a bunch of comics that will soon be TV shows so that when our casual fan friends get really into those shows, we can dismiss their takes with our knowledge of the comics. What’s that? That’s not how a healthy person with good relationships spends their summer? Whatever! All the same, I stand by this list of the best comiXolgoy sales - Memorial Day Weekend 2021, which does feature like three different comics that will soon be TV shows.

Enjoy! And happy, healthy 3-day weekend to you and yours…

Best comiXology Sales: Memorial Day Weekend 2021

Cover, Vol. 1
Writer:
Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: David Mack
Publisher: DC Comics - Jinxworld
Based on a true story, the intelligence community figures out that the traveling band of social misfits who make comic books are an exact match to the profiles of candidates recruited for intelligence and counterintelligence gathering. A well-known comics creator is recruited by the agency to live a double life as a spy. And convention season is upon us.
COVER is the blockbuster new epic from the acclaimed team of writer Brian Michael Bendis (Superman, Action Comics) and David Mack (Kabuki, Jessica Jones) as they reunite for the first time since their renowned run on Daredevil. Collects issues #1-6.
Why It’s Cool: Cover is one of a handful of comics this week that will soon have small screen adaptations, this one being an animated series for HBO that is actually slated to be directed series artist/co-creator, David Mack. So, that’s cool. What’s also cool is that this is just a great book, one that uses metafictional touches and behind the comics industry scenes anecdotes to spin a narrative which just might be a little bit real, maybe…who’s to say? This collection contains the entire series to date
Price: $6.79

See Daredevil's earliest battles against the Fixer (the man responsible for the death of Battlin' Jack Murdock), Electro, the Owl, Purple Man, Matador, Mr. Fear's Fellowship of Fear, the Sub-Mariner, Stilt-Man, Klaus Kruger, and the mysterious Organizer and his operatives, who would later become the Ani-Men! Meet Matt's one true love, Karen Page, his law partner and best friend Foggy Nelson, and Foggy's future wife Debbie Harris!
Why It’s Cool: In case you’ve missed it, contributing writer Bruno Savill De Jong has been doing an excellent series looking at the evolution of Daredevil comics through the years. Well, this week Marvel Comics is also doing a big Daredevil comics sale, pricing to move basically every Daredevil book ever made. So why not snag the earliest six years or so of Daredevil comics, go back and read Bruno’s series, and enjoy.

Naomi: Season One
Writers:
Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker
Artist: Jamal Campbell
Publisher: DC Comics - Wonder Comics
DC's biggest, newest mystery starts here! When a fight between Superman and Mongul crashes into a small Northwestern town, Naomi begins to uncover the last time a super-powered person visited her home-and how that might tie into her own origins and adoption. Follow Naomi's journey on a quest that will take her to the heart of the DC Universe and unfold a universe of ideas and stories that have never been seen before. Join writers Brian Michael Bendis and David Walker and breakout artist Jamal Campbell in Wonder Comics' massively ambitious new series and star...Naomi. Collects NAOMI issues #1-6.
Why It’s Cool: Naomi is another one of this week’s picks that’s coming to TV soon, this time in the form of a live-action series on the CW, which I believe may be part of that network’s long-running set of Arrowverse shows, which are actually okay if you just kind of embrace the melodrama and bloated season lengths. But I digress. Naomi as a comic was way more than okay, one of the best new teen superhero stories in a long while, with just an absolute star turn from artist Jamal Campbell.
Price: $5.94

New Super-Man, Vol. 1 - Vol. 3; and New Super-Man and the Justice League of China
Writer:
Gene Luen Yang
Artists: Viktor Bogdanovic, Richard Friend, Brent Peeples, and more
Publisher: DC Comics
An impulsive act of heroism thrusts an arrogant young man into the limelight of Shanghai as China begins to form its own Justice League of powerful heroes. Rising from the ashes of The Final Days of Superman, award-winning writer Gene Luen Yang and on-the-rise art star Victor Bogdanovic introduce readers to Kong Kenan—the New Super-Man! When the world needed a new hero, China made him!
Why It’s Cool: New Super-Man, which later evolved into New Super-Man and the Justice League of China, was easily one of the highlights of DC Comics Rebirth era, just an absolutely blast of a comic with a sharp sense of humor, a great set of challenges for its protagonist (both in terms of self-growth and in terms of using super powers to punch stuff), and a story that went some unpredictable places, given that all of the characters within were brand new. If you missed this, you can catch up now with all four volumes of this excellent book.
Price: $6.79 for volume one, and $5.94 for the other three volumes, or $24.61 for all four

Sandman, Vol. 1 - Vol. 11
Writer:
Neil Gaiman
Artists: Mike Dringenberg, Malcolm Jones III, and many more
Publisher: DC Comics - Vertigo
A rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven, THE SANDMAN follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic--and human--mistakes he's made during his vast existence.
Why It’s Cool: Sandman by Neil Gaiman and co. is the third and final comic on this week’s list that is headed to the small screen, this time going via Netflix and this week getting some exciting casting news. It’s also a seminal comics work, one that I would recommend to anyone, even folks who don’t enjoy or aren’t familiar with comics as a medium. With this sale, there’s rarely been a better time to catch up on this classic book if you yourself are still unfamiliar.
Price:
$66.19 for all 11 volumes
