Best comiXology sales: Weekend of May 22, 2020
By Zack Quaintance — A lot of publishers like to run giant digital comics sales for three day weekends, and this year’s mostly-quarantined Memorial Day is no exception. The biggest sale of the weekend is DC Comics discounting nearly 1,000 different collections, but that’s not all there is. There are plenty of other great books available too, and you can find our picks for the best available choices below.
Enjoy!
Best comiXology Sales - Weekend of May 22, 2020
3 Story: The Secret History of the Giant Man
Writer: Matt Kindt
Artist: Matt Kindt
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
From New York Times bestselling and Harvey award-winning Mind MGMT graphic novelist Matt Kindt comes a decades-spanning tale of love, secrets, aging, espionage, and family. Craig Pressgang's life is well documented in his official CIA biography, Giant Man: Pillar of America, but the heroic picture it paints is only half the story. The continuous growth caused by Craig's strange gigantism brings a variety of problems as he becomes more isolated and unknowable. Told during three eras by three different women with unique relationships with nearly three story tall Craig, 3 Story follows his sad life from his birth to the present.
Why It’s Cool: Matt Kindt is a high-level idiosyncratic creator, and whenever he writers/illustrates a book, it’s a must-buy. This 224-page graphic novel is no exception. Is a stunning and incredibly immersive work, a story that spans decades and includes thematic material that ranges from love to working for the CIA...plus continuous growth brought on by gigantism. There’s no other graphic novel quite like this one, and it’s just a fantastic read.

The Shadow/Batman
Writer: Steve Orlando
Artist: Giovanni Timpano
Publisher: Dynamite / DC Comics
The World's Greatest Mystery. The World's Greatest Detective. They can barely stand each other, so how will they possibly deal with the World's Greatest Evil? What legacy can two of the world's most enduring icons of justice leave once they discover an ancient evil has been living inside the world they protect for centuries. Can Batman and the Shadow save the world without destroying it in the process?
Why It’s Cool: Arguably the best character in America fiction (Batman) teams with one of the foundational pulp characters that influenced his creation back in the day — The Shadow. It’s a pairing that makes all kinds of sense given the inextricably linked histories of the character, and it’s played out here with modern superhero storytelling sensibilities by DC Comics / Marvel Comics writer Steve Orlando, all with excellent Giovanni Timpano art. This is an often-overlooked must-read for fans of superhero comics and the history of the pulps that gave it shape.

Writers: Mark Waid & Chris Samnee
Artist: Chris Samnee
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Collects Captain America #695-700. And when he faces the all-new Swordsman, strap yourselves in for a sword-vs.-shield duel unlike anything you've ever seen! Then, in the far future, Cap faces his worst nightmare as a man out of time once again! To save his country, he must adopt his strangest role yet! Be there as America's living legend is reimagined through the eyes of a pair of living legends!
Why It’s Cool: Quite possibly the best cartoonist to take on superhero comic book storytelling in the past two decades is Chris Samnee, and here he teams for a short run of Captain America stories with Mark Waid, doing so with one of Marvel’s classic characters, Captain America. Samnee is a sequential art storytelling powerhouse, with a set of sensibilities that just so perfectly suits the classic sensibilities of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby’s Silver Age creation. Simply put, this is a run that expertly captures everything there is to love about superhero comics past, present, and future.

Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles
Writer: Mark Russell
Artist: Mike Feehan
Publisher: DC Comics
Drama! Comedy! Tragedy! For the renowned Southern playwright called Snagglepuss, these are the ingredients that have made him a star of the New York stage and the glittering world that surrounds it. But the year is 1953, and behind the bright lights, darkness is brewing. As Snagglepuss prepares for his next hit play, there’s already a target on his back. The Red Scare is in full effect, and the House Un-American Activities Committee is hunting down every last subversive in show business. So far, Snagglepuss has stayed out of their spotlight. But Snagglepuss is gay…and his enemies are out to destroy him for it. One by one, his best friends are being blackballed, from legends like Lillian Hellman and Dorothy Parker to his fellow Southern gentleman Huckleberry Hound. Can Snagglepuss’ reputation survive the rampage of the right wing long enough for him to stage his next masterpiece? One thing’s for sure: the show must go on!
Why It’s Cool: I did not expect a Big 2 comic book to make me cry by so beautifully capturing the way societal conventions have long persecuted the other, and I certainly did not expect that Big 2 comic book to be an adaptation of the goofy cartoon character Snagglepuss. But this is all a thing that happened. This is a beautiful and searingly smart story, and one of the most welcomed and surprising series published by either Marvel or DC Comics in recent years. Thematically this book involves LGBTQ issues and the struggle of a starving artist. If you somehow missed this when it was published a few years back, now is your time to bliss out on this beautiful contained story.

The Flash by Mark Waid, Books 1 - 5
Writer: Mark Waid
Artists: Travis Charest, Mike Collins, Phil Hester, Patch Zircher, Greg Laroque, Mike Wieringo, Carlos Pacheco, and more
Publisher: DC Comics
In 1990, Mark Waid wrote his first Flash story. Under his keen pen, Wally West, who had already been running in the footsteps of the Flashes who came before him, matured into a Flash in his own right. Waid brought a depth of character to The Flash that changed him for good. As a child, Wally visits his Aunt Iris and her distinctly boring fiancé, the perpetually tardy Barry Allen. Things get interesting for Wally, first when he discovers that Barry and The Flash work together, and then when an accident in Barry's lab gives him powers just like his hero's! Young Wally is quickly in danger-not only from The Flash's enemies, but from the side effects of his new powers!
Why It’s Cool: The definitive Flash run of our lifetimes (and possibly of all-time) is the massive run that Mark Waid authored in the 90s. It’s a wonderful run of comics, and DC is continuing to publish it in new editions. So it’s all in print, with more coming each year. Now, you can catch up on 50-plus issues of these classic Flash comics via DC’s Memorial Day Sales, which has nearly 1000 collections within it.
Price: $5.99 for Book One, $6.99 each for Books Two - Five, or $33.95 for the entire run.

The Green Lantern, Vol. 1: Intergalactic Lawman
Writer: Grant Morrison
Artist: Liam Sharp
Publisher: DC Comics
Grant Morrison (All-Star Superman, Final Crisis, Happy!) is joined by superstar artist Liam Sharp (The Brave and the Bold: Batman and Wonder Woman) as together they explore just what makes Hal Jordan tick. It all begins when Earth’s Green Lantern encounters a mysterious alien hiding in plain sight, setting off a chain of events that will bring the Green Lantern Corps to its knees. There’s an intergalactic conspiracy afoot, as well as a traitor in the Green Lantern Corps’ ranks. Hal Jordan has faced the universe’s greatest threats, but what he faces next will challenge everything he believes in. The rules of planet Earth do not apply in outer space. To what lengths will Hal Jordan go to get his man? Find out in this mind-bending adventure that will forever change how you see the Green Lantern Corps! Collects issues #1-6 of the hot new series!
Why It’s Cool: This is a big year for Green Lantern. The character is getting the 80-year anniversary treatment. In addition, a new Green Lantern: Earth One, Vol. 2 HC is coming out in late July (and we loved the first volume). The highlight (for me, anyway) is actually the main Green Lantern title, which writer Grant Morrison says will be his final mainstream monthly superhero comic, ending arguably the most influential superhero writing career of our lifetimes. Even better, Morrison is paired here with Liam Sharp, who is just doing some of the most incredible DC cosmic artwork I’ve ever seen. The run is well until its second season, but you can get the first six issues here and see if it’s your thing as much as it is mine.

X-Force Vol. 1: New Beginnings
Writer: Peter Milligan
Artist: Mike Allred
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Sex. Money. Power. Fame. Is this an episode of "Behind the Music?" No, it's X-FORCE, the book that dares ask: okay, so what would happen if a group of mutants were actually accepted as media stars?
Why It’s Cool: Peter Milligan and Mike Allred put together an all-time great run of mutant and Marvel Comics, one that was totally unexpected and meta, reframing a superhero team as a celebrity culture quisi reality show...and it all starts in this volume of X-Force that almost literally blows up everything you thought you knew about this property and this comic. It’s fantastic, experimental stuff, and it’s the best value on our list here today.
