Yes, this week’s list is truly varied. Add on top of that one of the best comics memoirs of late and all-time great superhero reinvention comic, and there’s a lot to like for great prices this week.

Alias, Ultimate Collection Vol. 1 - Vol. 2

Meet Jessica Jones, a former costumed super hero who, in fact, stunk at it. With powers unremarkable in comparison to the great icons of Marvel, Jessica never found her niche. But once she hung up her cape, she was surprised at how quickly she fell out of the spandex loop. Sure, she may hang out with some of the Avengers socially, but she`s not welcome in Avengers Mansion. And she feels the rejection. She's self-destructive, drinks too much, and has a huge inferiority complex. And did we mention that she's now a Private Investigator who specializes in cases of the super human variety? So if you're thirsty for the film noir feel and complex characterization, grab a stool at the bar!
Why It’s Cool: There’s definitely a case to be made for some of the other books published in Marvel Comics’ MAX imprint, but for my money, Alias is the best series to come out of that initiative. The Punisher would certainly like a word, but Alias is just so much more contained, in a really satisfying way. And now you can get both ultimate collections of this great series on sale.

Astro City, Vol. 1 - Vol. 5

The original ASTRO CITY collection is offered in a new edition with new cover art by Alex Ross! Welcome to Astro City, a shining city on a hill where super heroes patrol the skies. Each chapter in this collection is a standalone story, highlighting different aspects or characters in the Astro City world. The city's leading super hero tries to be everywhere at once, and berates himself for every wasted second as he longs for just a moment of his own. A smalltime hood learns a hero's secret identity, and tries to figure out how to profit from the knowledge. A beat reporter gets some advice from his editor on his first day on the job. A young woman tries to balance the demands of her family with her own hopes and desires. Despite the fantastic settings, the characters in these slice-of-life stories feel like real people, and that gives the stories real power.
Why It’s Cool: Personally, Astro City was the book that broke me out of a Big 2-only mindset for comics as a young reader, so I’ll always remember it fondly. My personal bias aside, the early volumes of this series are very very good, and they’re now on-sale from Image Comics, in easy to follow volumes. This is a must-read comic for superhero fans, even if they’re totally unfamiliar with it to start.

Fights: One Boy’s Triumph Over Violence

Why It’s Cool: I absolutely loved Joel Christian Gill’s memoir Fights: One Boy’s Triumph Over Violence when I read it last year, so much so that it was one of the lead books on my Best Graphic Novels of 2020 list. I highly recommend it for any and all comics fans. There’s a lot to love about both how this story is told and the messages within it.

Is This How You See Me?

Maggie and Hopey leave their significant others at home and take a weekend road trip to go to a punk scene reunion in their old neighborhood. Threaded throughout are flashbacks to 1979, during the formative stages in their lifelong relationship, as the perceived invincibility of youth is juxtaposed against all of the love, heartbreak, and self-awareness that comes with lives actually lived. Serialized over the past four years in Love and Rockets: New Stories and the new comic book series, Is This How You See Me? collects Hernandez’s unsentimental, long-form masterpiece together for the first time.
Why It’s Cool: Simply put, there is not better long-running story in all of comics than Jaime Hernandez’s opus, the Locas stories from Love and Rockets. You can read most of those stories start to finish via comiXology Unlimited, but the newer stuff isn’t on there. Luckily, you can get the most recent book in that series on sale now, and that would be this one, Is This How You See Me?

Miracle Man, Vol. 1 - Vol. 3

Why It’s Cool: Finally, every time I do one of these lists, I like to incorporate one set of classic comics that I personally have never read but intend to soon…and this week, that list is the classic Alan Moore-Alan Davis collaboration Miracle Man, which helped launch the former’s career in superhero comic books. I’m really looking forward to snagging these books, and finally filling in that blindspot in my own comics reading.
