Best ComiXology Sales: Weekend of September 18, 2020

PICK OF THE WEEK
Batman ‘66, Vol. 1 - Vol. 5
Writers:
Jeff Parker and others
Artists: Richard Case and others
Publisher: DC Comics
Put on your go-go boots and get ready to "Batusi" back to the Swingin' 60s as DC Comics reimagines the classic Batman TV series in comics form for the first time! These all-new stories portray The Caped Crusader, The Boy Wonder and their fiendish rogues gallery just the way viewers remember them.
Why It’s Cool: Few ideas within corporate comics have made as much sense or been as much fun as Batman ‘66, a comic set within the campy world of the 1966 Batman television show. It’s also executed to perfection by the creative team of Jeff Parker and Richard Case, who are joined later in the run by other great creators. The bottom line, though, is that these are clever and colorful comics, a perfect tone and setting to cheer up superhero/pop culture fans in these trying times. The whole run is on sale this week. Now, here’s hoping for a Batman ‘89 comic at some point soon.
Price:
$5.99 each, or $29.94 total

Batman: Year One
Writer:
Frank Miller
Artist: David Mazzucchelli
Publisher: DC Comics
In 1986, writer Frank Miller joined with artist David Mazzucchelli and colorist Richmond Lewis to create one of the most groundbreaking superhero tales ever to see print—BATMAN: YEAR ONE, now available in a deluxe edition! Originally published over four issues in the monthly BATMAN series, this mesmerizing story followed the unprecedented success of Miller’s apocalyptic saga BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS to become one of the most popular and influential graphic novels in the history of American comics. By turns brutal, tender, grim and hopeful, Miller and Mazzucchelli’s masterful reimagination of Bruce Wayne’s first year as Gotham City’s champion has electrified generations of readers with its unprecedented fusion of gritty realism and elegance of form.
Why It’s Cool: There’s debatably no more quintessential Batman comic than Batman: Year One, the classic Post-Crisis tale from writer Frank Miller and artist David Mazzucchelli. It may feel a bit familiar at the moment, but at the time this influential comic was a reimagining of Bruce Wayne’s first year fighting crime in Gotham, one that didn’t shy away from his status as a rookie vigilante. If you want to gage the impact of this story, you can look no further to some of the most prominent adaptations to other media, including the film that launch Christopher Nolan’s Bat Trilogy, Batman Begins. Anyway, you can get the deluxe version of the book online this weekend and on sale.

Hulk: World War Hulk
Writer:
Greg Pak
Artist:
John Romita, Jr.
Publisher:
Marvel Comics
Collects World War Hulk (2007) #1-5. Hulk found peace on the planet Sakaar. But when the warp core of the ship that brought him there exploded, killing his family, Hulk vowed to destroy his betrayers - the heroes of Earth!
Why It’s Cool: Speaking of classic comics that gave rise to beloved film adaptations, up next on our list is World War Hulk, which was a big part of the inspiration for one of my personal favorite Marvel movies, Thor: Ragnarok. This is the storyline in which the Hulk has found peace on the planet Sakaar…until a ship explosion kills his family and inspires Hulk to seek revenge upon those he believes have wronged him — the superheroes of Earth! It’s a fantastic Hulk story start to finish, and a must-read for anyone with even a cursory interest in the big green character.

Kill or Be Killed, Vol. 1
Writer:
Ed Brubaker
Artist: Sean Phillips
Publisher: Image Comics
The darkly twisted story of a young man forced to kill bad people, and how he struggles to keep his secret as it slowly begins to ruin his life and the lives of his friends and loved ones. Both a thriller and a deconstruction of vigilantism, KILL OR BE KILLED is unlike anything this award-winning team has done before. Collects KILL OR BE KILLED #1-4.
Why It’s Cool: There is perhaps no more cohesive and finely-honed creative team in all of comics than Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, and while they have quite the impressive track record telling street level crime stories (see their seminal work together, Criminal), Kill or Be Killed treads that territory through a bit of a different lens: a young vigilante who may have some serious issues with his sanity. It’s a great story, and this first volume is the obvious jumping on point.

Why It’s Cool: Cinebook publishes fantastic European comics that have often fallen under the radar in the United States, and this week some of those comics are on sale — The Route 66 List. These books are fascinating, in that their extremely-well done, delivering an outsider’s perspective on the Americana tropes that have long defined the fabric of life in this culture. This series, for example, focuses on the iconic Route 66, combining it here with the famed true life serial killer of Illinois, John Wayne Gacy, loosely of course.
