Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of September 11, 2020

By Zack Quaintance — There are a ton of superhero comics sales happening this weekend, which is why our best comiXology sales for the weekend of September 11, 2020 are…that’s right…primarily superhero comics. We’ve got some good ones, too — from Jason Aaron’s epic run on Thor to the classic Batman: Black and White comics, which we just learned this week would be returning with new stories in December. Anyway, if you’re looking for some top-tier capes storytelling this weekend, we’ve got your picks.

Check them out below!

Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of September 11, 2020

PICK OF THE WEEK
Jason' Aaron’s THOR - Complete Collection Vol. 1 & Vol. 2
Writer:
Jason Aaron
Artists: Esad Ribic, Ron Garney, Butch Guice, Nic Klein, Russell Dauterman, Jorge Molina, and more
Publisher: Marvel Comics
A trail of blood consumes Thor's past, present and future! Throughout the ages, gods are vanishing — and Thor must unravel the gruesome mystery of Gorr the God Butcher! In the distant past, Thor discovers a cave that echoes with the cries of tortured gods. In the present, Thor follows the bloody wake of murdered gods across the depths of space. And millennia from now, the last god-king of Asgard makes his final stand. All three time-bending Thors must unite — but will it all be for naught if the massive Godbomb is triggered? Elsewhere, Malekith the Accursed makes his return! As the former lord of the Dark Elves begins a bloody rampage, Thor must find a new league of allies to aid him! And back on Midgard, what's going on with Dr. Jane Foster?
Why It’s Cool: In recent years, no lengthy superhero comics run has been as epic, grandiose, and well-done as Jason Aaron’s Thor, on which he has collaborated with some of the best artists in comics, from Esad Ribic to Russell Dauterman. Now, Marvel Comics is collecting those books into some giant volumes…and you get the first two of them (both of which have tons of comics in them) for less than $7 a piece. If you missed this run during the years it was happening, there has never been a better chance to dive in. Just be warned that once you start this story, it will be tough to put it down.
Price: $6.79 each, or $13.58 for both

Aquaman by Kelly Sue DeConnick & Robson Rocha, Vol. 1 & Vol. 2
Writer:
Kelly Sue DeConnick
Artist: Robson Rocha
Publisher: DC Comics
In the wake of the epic “Drowned Earth,” an amnesiac Arthur washes ashore on a remote island and ends up being cared for by a young woman named Caille, who’s just a little too curious for comfort. And as a lifetime of horror movies has taught us, there’s something strange going on in this island village. Aquaman needs to come to his senses quickly...or he might wind up sleeping with the fishes instead of just chatting with them. Collects AQUAMAN #43-47 by the new creative team of writer Kelly Sue DeConnick and artist Robson Rocha.
Why It’s Cool: Aquaman by writer Kelly Sue DeConnick and artist Robson Rocha has low-key been one of the single best runs at DC Comics over the past 18 months or so, and it doesn’t seem like enough readers are into it. That’s not odd. Aquaman is, perhaps, one of the harder mainstream characters to garner attention, but now the first two volumes of this excellent comic are on sale for prices that make them accessible. If you haven’t read these books yet, the time has come — you’ll be glad you dove in (sorry!).
Price: $5.94 for Vol. 1 and $7.64 for Vol. 2

Batman: Black and White Vol. 1 - Vol. 4
Writers:
Neil Gaiman, Brian Bolland, Joe Kelly, Jeff Lemire, and more
Artists: Brian Bolland, Bruce Timm, Rafael Grampa, Rafael Albuquerque, and more
Publisher: DC Comics
Presented in stark black-and-white tones that all too easily represent Batman's worldview comes this collection of the Darknight Detective's hardboiled adventures. With stories and art by a stellar line-up of comic industry creators, including Neil Gaiman (THE SANDMAN), Joe Kubert (TOR), Frank Miller (THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, RONIN), Jim Lee (WILDCATS, BATMAN) and others, it's not surprising that this collection was awarded the comic industry's prestigious Eisner Award for excellence.
Why It’s Cool: This week news broke that in December the classic Batman: Black and White anthology series would be returning, armed with some of the best creative talent in all of comics, including really intriguing names like David Aja, JH Williams III, and more. This is the continuation of a classic series that first debuted back in 1996…and is entirely on sale now for some great prices. In fact, you can get all four of these great volumes for about $26. If you want to dive into some classic Batman books, now is the time.
Price:
Vol. 1 - Vol. 3 are $5.94 each, and Vol. 4 is $8.49; or buy them all for $26.31

Doctor Strange by Donny Cates Vol. 1 & Vol. 2
Writer:
Donny Cates
Artists: Gabriel Hernandez Walta, Niko Henrichon, and Frazer Irving
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Evil is everywhere, and the world needs the Sorcerer Supreme more than ever. But the Sorcerer Supreme is now…Loki?! Say hello to the Master of the Mischief Arts! The Norse lord of lies has the cloak, the spells — he's even got Zelma Stanton as his assistant. (And possibly more?) Is this the chance Loki needed to become a hero at last, or is the trickster god dangerously close to unlimited power? And what happened to Stephen Strange, the former Sorcerer Supreme? Down but not out, Stephen may just have one last play left in him — one that could shake the Marvel Universe to its core! But will it be enough to take back his title, with the life of someone he loves hanging in the balance?
Why It’s Cool: These days, Donny Cates is one of the hottest writers at Marvel, helping to guide a large part of the publishers shared superhero universe by penning event after event. Cates, however, is still relatively new to Marvel, having essentially started there less than four years ago, and one of the first runs Cates wrote on his own for Marvel was Doctor Strange. It was a short run, but Cates imbued it with all kinds of feeling and heart (centered around a dog), and it remains one of the most touching stories Cates has done in his career.
Price:
$2.54 each or $5.08 for both

Men of Wrath
Writer:
Jason Aaron
Artist: Ron Garney
Publisher: Image Comics
Ever since Great-Grandfather Isom killed a man over some sheep, a black cloud has hung over the Raths. Now, a century later, aging hitman Ira Rath takes a job that will decide his family’s fate once and for all. Acclaimed creators JASON AARON (SOUTHERN BASTARDS, Scalped) and RON GARNEY (Daredevil, Wolverine: Weapon X) bring their creator-owned tale of a Southern family whose only legacy is violence to Image Comics with this remastered hardcover edition. Collects MEN OF WRATH #1-5
Why It’s Cool: This book delivers nearly 150 pages of gritty crime comics from the excellent (and now superstar) creative team of writer Jason Aaron and Ron Garney. The name of this collection gives readers a fairly accurate idea of what to expect, and the book delivers a weighty and poignant story for anyone willing to take this plunge.
Price: $8.09
