Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of May 14, 2021

By Zack Quaintance — Usually in this section, I find some through-line for the group of books, but you know what, folks? For this week’s best comiXology sales weekend of May 14, I just couldn’t do it. It’s one of the most eclectic set of picks we’ve had in a while, featuring a pair of very personal sci-fi stories, a pair of classic DC tales, and one of my personal favorite comics made in the past decade. Not too shabby, not too shabby at all.

Here’s hoping you find some picks for yourself…

Best comiXology Sales: Weekend of May 14, 2021

Extremity, Vol. 1 - Vol. 2
Writer/Artist:
Daniel Warren Johnson
Colorist: Mike Spicer
Publisher: Image Comics - Skybound
Thea dreams. Not of a better life, but of revenge on the clan that ruined her family. With ferocious battles between man, machines, and monsters ahead…who knows where her quest for vengeance will take her? Creator DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON (Space Mullet) and colorist MIKE SPICER present a bold new vision, where the beauty and imagination of Studio Ghibli meet the intensity of Mad Max, in this all-new Skybound Original.
Why It’s Cool: It’s an odd thing to call a comic about living on floating islands above monsters in a post-apocalyptic wasteland to be intensely personal, but that’s comics. In this book, Daniel Warren Johnson explores his fear of losing a hand, specifically his drawing hand, and what emerges is an engaging family drama with Johnson’s always stellar art.
Price: $6.49 each, or $12.98 for both

Goodnight Paradise
Writer:
Joshua Dysart
Artist: Alberto Ponticelli
Publisher: TKO Studios
VENICE BEACH, CALIFORNIA
SUN. SURF. SEX. MONEY. MURDER.
After finding the body of a murdered teenage runaway, a homeless man vows to bring her killer to justice.
Why It’s Cool: If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it dozens of times — Goodnight Paradise is one of my favorite comics of the past decade. It’s a book I recommend often, and it’s a book I recommend to anyone without reservation. It’s a nuanced and relentlessly-smart neo-noir comic that takes on matters like the housing crisis, gentrification, and societal inequities. It’s well done, intriguing, and the exact right type of comic it feels good to get lost within in the year 2021.
Price: $1.99

JLA: Earth 2
Writer:
Grant Morrison
Artist: Frank Quitely
Publisher: DC Comics
They are the world's gravest super-villains: Ultraman, Owlman, Superwoman, Power Ring and Johnny Quick--the legendary Crime Syndicate of Amerika! Nothing has ever seriously threatened the global corruption they proudly enforce, but now a twisted mirror image of the CSA has arrived from the flip side of reality. Can anything stop this so-called "JUSTICE LEAGUE," or will the stable, perfect evil of the Earth 2 fall victim to the tyranny of law, righteousness and freedom?
Why It’s Cool: Many years after the all-time great Justice League run penned by Grant Morrison ended, the writer returned to the characters for a story with their top-tier collaborator Frank Quitely. What results is an interesting book that feels very much like a coda to that earlier run, as well as something wholly new and of itself.
Price: $5.99

Proxima Centauri
Writer/Artist:
Faryl Dalrymple
Publisher: Image Comics
Teenage wizard adventurer Sherwood Breadcoat is trapped on Proxima Centauri, a manufactured dimensional sphere 4.243 light-years from Earth. Looking for escape -- and a way back to his brother -- Sherwood must also deal with his confusing emotions, alien creatures, and all sorts of fantastic dangers.
Starring Sherwood Breadcoat, "The Scientist" Duke Herzog, Dr. EXT the Time Traveler, the ghost M. Parasol, Shakey the Space Wizard, and Dhog Dahog, PROXIMA CENTAURI is a psychedelic science-fantasy action comic book drama from FAREL DALRYMPLE (The Wrenchies, POP GUN WAR).
Why It’s Cool: I really loved this series when I read it in singles a few years back. Like all of Dalyrymple’s work, it’s fantastical and nuanced, unlike any other book you’ve read, blending as it does elements of sic-fi and fantasy with a psychedelic aesthetic.
Price: $6.99

Wonder Woman: War of the Gods
Writer:
George Perez
Artists: George Perez, with Jill Thompson and Cynthia Martin
Publisher: DC Comics
Legendary comics author George Pérez's epic Wonder Woman saga!
On Wonder Woman's island home of Themyscira, angry voices are rising. Following a massacre in man's world, Queen Hippolyta is presumed dead, and the Amazons' thirst for revenge is strong. But even as her people teeter on the brink of war, Princess Diana is forcibly summoned to Olympus, where Zeus and the Greek gods are being attacked by their Roman counterparts-in defiance of all heavenly order. The realms of the gods are being turned upside down and inside out, and if left unchecked the chaos will quickly engulf the earth.
Beneath it all lies a tangled web of magic and deceit that ensnares everyone from Superman and Captain Marvel to Lobo and the Suicide Squad. But even as the world's greatest heroes unite to stop the warring pantheons, mortals and immortals alike remain pawns in a single mastermind's twisted game.
The evil sorceress Circe will stop at nothing to have her revenge on Wonder Woman-even if it means destroying the universe itself!
Collects WAR OF THE GODS #1-4, WONDER WOMAN #58-62 and WONDER WOMAN: WAR OF THE GODS.
Why It’s Cool: Every week I pick one book that I’ve never read but have long wanted to, and as such will be purchasing this week. That title on this list goes to Wonder Woman: War of the Gods, the major event within George Perez’s epic Wonder Woman run (which is also on sale, for those interested).
Price: $8.99
