SMALL PRESS PREVIEW: Holy West
By Zack Quaintance — When you’re running your own Kickstarter (as I currently am!), you become acutely aware of how many excellent comics are being made through this indie-enabling crowdfunding platform. When I came across Holy West, I was so impressed that I immediately thought to myself — now this is what a Kickstarter comic should be. It really is that good and well put together.
It has an easy elevator pitch — it’s the hunt for the Holy Grail…in the American Old West! — and it has fantastic artwork to showoff, which it does well on its campaign page with an accompanying set of paragraphs elaborating on the concept for what stands to ultimately be a five-issue miniseries. You can (and should!) read those paragraphs for yourself, but they really flesh out the scope of what just might be one of the most exciting new indie comics published all year. There are references to Parzival, Arthurian legend, and David Lynch. Essentially, this book is very much speaking my comics love language, and I can’t wait. Highly recommend that you all check this out as well.

Holy West
Writer: Seth Jacob
Artist: Daniel Irizarri
Holy West is an adaptation of the quest for the Holy Grail. It's loosely based on Parzival, but draws from all of chivalric romance, from Grail stories which involved pursuing the highest spiritual ideal: compassion. It's also a love letter to Westerns, to those cowboys and gunslingers who are the American equivalent of Britain's Arthurian knights.
