EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW: Sas Milledge's MAMO #1, a coming-of-age witch tale

By Zack Quaintance — This summer, Sas Milledge has a new book on the way from BOOM! Studios’ excellent, YA-skewing imprint, BOOM! Box, that book being MAMO #1. This book looks absolutely beautiful, much like Milledge’s recent work for DC Comics YA line did, that being The Lost Carnival: A Dick Grayson Graphic Novel. You can see just how pretty this comic looks below, in the set of pages we have the honor of unveiling here for the first time.

In terms of the plot, MAMO #1 is about a young hedge witch named Orla O’Reily whose grandmother passes away, her grandmother being the titular Mamo. Upon returning to her hometown, Orla makes an unlikely new friend as she starts to also investigate a series magical disturbances and mysteries. She also comes to realize that her grandmother was managing the magical relationships between the townsfolk and the fae, and without her, the seas are impossible to fish and crops have soured.

MAMO #1 — the first of five parts — marks the start of a story about a divide between humanity and the faerie world, about coming from a long line of powerful hedge witches, and about the potential for unlikely friends to turn into something more…anyway! MAMO #1 will be available in comic shops on July 7. You can find five interior pages revealed here for the first time, along with two variant covers for the first issue…enjoy!
