KITH + KIN, an anthology - SMALL PRESS PREVIEW
By Zack Quaintance — This isn’t a new or insightful statement, but the breadth of new comics being made these days is really stunning. For example, I recently read Spitting Image, which was published by the Nashville Review, a literary magazine out of Vanderbilt University in that city. Spitting Image is the work of writers Brittany Matter and Heather Ayers, and artist Sally Cantirino. In this story, they’ve collaborated for a tale that spans seven pages.
Spitting Image is a stunning and mournful story, subtle and understated in the way it probes questions about time, emptiness, family, mourning, loss, and memorial. It’s a largely silent comic that still manages to say so much in the few pages that it occupies. I really enjoyed it, and I was also delighted to learn that it would potentially be part of a forthcoming anthology called KITH + KIN: An Anthology, which is live on Kickstarter now. That book features a host of great creators too, including the team behind Spitting Image as well as others, such as Erik Whalen, Kelly Latham, Gwynn Tavares, Caroline Autopsy, Olivia Stephens, Tom Napolitano, Elena Gogou, Greville Jacques, Megan Stevenson, Caroline Nolasco, and Krystian Rutledge.
It’s definitely a Kickstarter to watch, and you find a link to its page on the crowdsourcing site below:
