SMALL PRESS PREVIEW: Galactic Junk Squad & Creatures from the Chaos Realm
By Zack Quaintance — It’s been about a month since we started this new Small Press Preview feature, and I think it’s safe to say that this is a hit. We’re getting a pretty steady stream of submissions from rising comics creators with truly interesting work to share. And, at the same time, I am selfishly getting to check out artists to potentially collaborate with and keep an eye on in the future. Everyone wins!
With my solipsistic ramble now safely out of the way, let’s move onward to this week’s preview!
Galactic Junk Squad (Well, More Like Family) Issue #4
We’ve been a fan of David Moses’ cosmic absurdist family dramedy Galactic Junk Squad (Well More Like Family) basically since he finished the first issue and reached out for a review. As you’re about to see below, the project is now on its fourth issue, and it’s even spun off an anthology around some of the gnarlier creates that have appeared (if only briefly) in the book.
Moses’ work pairs Kirby-esque imaginative space cartooning with a subtle and dry sense of humor that comes together into a package that just works. You can check out some of the artwork for yourself below, following the pitch for the project from it’s Kickstarter page (which is live now!).
At the end of GJSWMLF Vol. 1, the squad was in shambles - and Issue 4 picks up right where we left off! It features 3 five-page chapters following the split story lines of Gorginchevv, Deyuhn & Booreen, and Kerrbaid & the Qosmacrew - and an epilogue to tee up the next new threat! Bonus - Issue ZERO will be included, which uncovers the origin of Gorginchevv, and Deyuhn and Booreen's meet-cute!
Here’s some preview art from the issue #4…
Creatures from the Chaos Realm Anthology
Spinning out of GJSWMLF #4 is an entire anthology, dubbed Creatures from the Chaos Realm. This anthology features four stories based on characters that appear in the main book briefly. Three of them are scripted by Moses and illustrated by different cartoonists, with those being Corey Corcoran (Dyranogore), Josie Breck (Jerzerker), and Negashi Armada (N-Krochor). A fourth story was written and illustrated by another cartoonist with minimal input from Moses, that one being Cory MacDonald (Brutalus).
Here’s the pitch from the Kickstarter:
Introduced in Gorginchevv's arc is a motley cast of new characters - the brood of Entropea. These gnarly, gruesome gargoyles have their own origin stories, which are collected on the reverse side of Issue 4 - in the first installment of CREATURES from the CHAOS REALM!!
And now the art. First up, here are some preview pages from Corey Corcoran’s story (scripted by David Moses), Dyranogore!
Finally, here are some preview pages from Cory MacDonald’s anthology story (with minimal input from David Moses), Brutalus!
The stories will also have covers by Jasper Jubenvill, which you can check out below…
As you can see from all the work above, this is an aggressively imaginative project, where the only tie that really bings is the characters spun out of Moses’ cosmic absurdist family dramedy, Galactic Junk Squad (Well, More Like Family). It’s good stuff, and you can support if via the Kickstarter link below!
